Position Summary Information

Primary Purpose
The Lab Coordinator is responsible for supervision of laboratories, and autonomy over laboratory resources and equipment. They are responsible for teaching 4 in-person laboratory sections in Human Physiology and/or Microbiology for biology majors, training graduate student teaching assistants to independently oversee laboratory sections, maintaining grades for large laboratory classes (6-8 lab sections), and developing changes in curriculum.
Essential Functions
  • Responsible for administration of one of the department's teaching laboratories for majors (6-8 lab sections).
    • Develop and update laboratory curriculum and activities.
    • Create/administer lab quizzes and exams/practicals.
    • Update and maintain lab course website.
    • Ensure grades are accurately recorded in timely manner and that final lab grades are submitted to the lecture faculty.
  • Collaborates with Lab Manager to supervise day-to-day operations of undergraduate laboratories and graduate teaching assistants.
  • Provides counsel and guidance for students to support their success with coursework, assists with rescheduling of laboratories or lab practicals when needed, and at times, serves as a liaison between students, teaching assistants, and/or faculty for explanation, clarification or problem resolution.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned or requested.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biological Sciences or related discipline.
  • One (1) year of experience working in a biology or other life science teaching laboratory.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Biological Sciences or related discipline, or must have met the requirements of a Master's degree in Biological Sciences or related discipline by July 1, 2024.
  • Possesses a positive attitude and excellent interpersonal skills and proven ability to work successfully at all levels of the organization and with diverse populations and has demonstrated commitment to inclusive teaching practices.
  • Ability to foster an environment of respect and inclusiveness with undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Exemplifies traits of good judgment, confidentiality, and discretion in communicating with colleagues and students.
  • Ability to work under pressure, remain calm in stressful situations and display patience and tolerance.
  • Demonstrated ability to set goals, manage time and multiple assignments to meet expected course outcomes and deadlines.
  • Advanced skill in the handling and operation of equipment typically used in biology laboratories (i.e. autoclaves, dishwashers and liquid nitrogen tanks).
  • Solid knowledge of lab procedures following established safety guidelines and practices.
  • Proficiency with MS Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Learning Management Systems like Canvas.
  • Experience and sensitivity in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Demonstrated experience in advancing social justice, equity, and inclusion in a university setting.
  • Ability to engage and integrate culturally responsive practices and knowledge in their work.

Work requires frequent periods of standing and walking. Moderate periods of sitting and infrequent periods of bending, stooping, reaching, and kneeling. Use of computers with repetitive use of hands and wrists. Exposure to chemical and hazardous waste typical in biological lab. May be requested to lift up to twenty-five (25)lbs.

Work Environment/Work Week/Travel:
Schedule is dependent on department need. Typically, eight (8) hours per day and five (5) days per week. Must be able to work a late shift until 8pm on at least three (3) weeknights.
Hiring Range $58,000 per year. We consider factors such as, but not limited to, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's qualifications, internal equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
