Summary of Job Duties:The Public Safety Officer is responsible for the enforcement of traffic and criminal laws and parking regulations. This position is governed by law enforcement standards, state and federal laws, and agency policy.

Job Summary
Responsible for providing campus safety and security and the enforcement of traffic and criminal laws, parking regulations, and institutional policies. The position is governed by law enforcement standards, state and federal laws, and institution policy. The position reports to the Chief of Campus Police.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

* Patrolling campus to detect and prevent crimes, enforcing traffic laws and parking regulations, and identifying safety hazards and violators.

* Performing safety checks of buildings and securing buildings.

* Conducting investigations of crimes, accidents, and reporting incidents committed on campus.

* Directing traffic during periods of high density.

* Arresting violators, writing incident reports, and testifying in court as necessary.

* Receiving and investigating incident reports and complaints from students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

* Cooperating with city, county, and state law enforcement officials in serving warrants, apprehending individuals, and obtaining information associated with investigations.

* Monitoring security and fire panel for security and fire detection, assisting with checking the alarm systems and emergency power supply.

* Responding to alarms, calls for assistance, checking for locked or unlocked buildings and offices, as necessary, and assisting stranded motorists and others in need of assistance.

* Using tactics, as trained and equipped, in preserving the safety of citizens, oneself, and fellow officers.

* Communicating general and public safety information to students, staff, faculty, and the general public.

* Detecting, investigating, and reporting breaches of facilities, property damage, missing property, and hazardous conditions; maintaining uniforms and equipment; attending training.

* Assisting in planning and implementing public service programs and training.

* Perform other duties as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

* Knowledge of general law enforcement methods and techniques; knowledge of traffic and criminal laws, and parking regulations; ability to enforce laws and regulations, direct traffic, and maintain order.

* General knowledge of computers.

* Skilled in the operation of firearms. Ability to demonstrate safety and accuracy in use of firearms, and pass annual state requirement for firearms certification, as well as departmental requirements.

* Communication Skills: Ability to write and speak clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations; read and interpret written information. Ability to prepare written reports and logs and to edit work for accuracy and thoroughness, and to monitor own work to ensure quality. Requires STRONG attention to detail.

* Dependability: Ability to arrive at work on time consistently; follow instructions; respond to management direction; and solicit feedback to improve performance.

Special Job Dimensions

* Occasional exposure to hazardous and/or stressful situations.

* Ability to stand for extended periods of time in indoor settings, outdoor settings, and in all weather conditions at all times of day.

* Ability to give chase on foot and apprehend and detain subjects as permitted by law.

* Must be able to perform all job-related duties while wearing required uniform and duty equipment to include a body armor vest.

* Must be able to be recalled for duty at all times in case of emergency.Qualifications:

The formal education equivalent of a high school diploma

* Certified as a law enforcement officer by the Arkansas Law Enforcement Standards Training Academy, or a similar academy, in accordance with ACA 12-9-106

* Possession of a valid state motor vehicle operator's license.
