GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

The Ragon Institute of MGH, MIT and Harvard is an internationally renowned cutting-edge research center that studies infectious diseases. The Processing Lab plays a central role within the Institute, providing researchers with prepared cells to study. The available position would offer the technician the opportunity to be involved in high-quality research with some of the brightest minds in the field of HIV immunology and virology. Specifically, the technician would contribute to several ongoing projects by providing cells, plasma, and DNA to researchers who have been studying different aspects of HIV-infection, AIDS, and COVID-19. This position is ideal for graduating seniors who are interested in pursuing a career in medicine or research and desire flexible hours.

We are interested in hiring an enthusiastic individual with a sound understanding of cell biology and a strong interest in immunology and viral infection, particularly HIV. The candidate must have exceptional organizational skills, possess the ability to work within a team atmosphere, and be a self-starter who is willing to work in the second shift.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Please note, the functions below are representative of major duties that are typically associated with these positions. Specific responsibilities may vary based upon departmental needs. Similarly, not all duties that have been outlined will be assigned to each position.
  • Receiving and processing HIV+ samples, following established standard operation procedures and biosafety regulations for working in a biosafety level 2 lab.
  • Separation of immune cells from HIV+ blood for investigators' use.
  • Harvesting and storing plasma samples.
  • Isolation of genomic DNA from granulocytes for HLA typing.
  • Proper handling of cryogenic samples and basic maintenance of cryogenic storage system as well as thawing, distributing and database cataloging of samples.
  • Performing internal specimen consolidation and working on the reconciliation of preparing the cryopreservation storage for the Biorepository projects.
  • Ensuring quality control of equipment and proper preparation of reagents.
  • Keeping highly organized and detailed records of samples received, processed, and distributed.
  • Data entry, checking consistency of data, and database quality control.
  • Preparing specimens for shipment in accordance with all applicable shipping regulations
  • Two-years commitment to the Ragon Institute preferred.

SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

To be considered for the position, the applicant must be motivated, provide evidence that he/she is willing to assume the responsibilities associated with joining the processing lab, willing to work from 10:00AM to 06:30PM shift, and able to lift 25-30 pounds from difficult stances frequently. The candidate must have excellent documentation skills. Computer experience is desirable, especially Excel.

    Qualifications

    EDUCATION:

    • Bachelor's degree required.

    EXPERIENCE:

    • New graduates with some lab experience (via course work, internships, etc.) or those without any prior research experience will be considered for the Research Technician I position outlined above.
