Job Summary

The position is seeking a Staff Research Associate with some experience/training obtained in school or related program, with the performance of bench science assays as well as interaction with human study participants. The lab focuses on translational research where blood and lung samples are collected from human subjects. These samples are processed in the laboratory to perform molecular and cell biologic techniques to study lung inflammation and remodeling. Communication, organization and self-motivation are necessary skills to be successful in this position. Under PI supervision, the Staff Research Associate will learn how to perform wet bench skills will include processing of blood, RNA and DNA, analysis of RNA with PCR or RNA-seq methods, cell culture, flow cytometry and sputum processing. Data collection and entry into databases requires attention and accuracy. Processing of PBMC for flow cytometry requires careful experimental set up and execution. Experience with Microsoft Office programs including Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Microsoft Office Access will be expected. Organization skills include legible and accurate labeling, correct storage of biologic samples and accurate record keeping of sample location in databases. Professional and courteous attitude is required for interacting with study subjects and peers.

Department Description

The Pulmonary, Critical Care, Allergy and Sleep Medicine Program includes the UCSF Pulmonary, Critical Care, Allergy and Sleep Medicine division (based at the Parnassus and Mt. Zion sites), the Pulmonary and Critical Care divisions of the San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center and the San Francisco VA Medical Center, and at UCSF's Mission Bay campus. Each emphasizes different aspects of care for patients with lung disease and lung disease research. The Pulmonary, Critical Care, Allergy and Sleep Medicine Division in the Department of Medicine have a long history of providing outstanding clinical care, performing innovative research and training academic scientists and physicians. We currently have active, well-funded clinical, translational and basic research programs in lung development, international lung health, pulmonary immunology, genetics of pulmonary and allergic diseases, lung transplantation, microbial pathogenesis, airway diseases, acute lung injury, pulmonary fibrosis, pulmonary malignancies and pulmonary health disparities. Our large, NIH training grant has been continuously funded since 1966. Nearly a quarter of all academic pulmonologists in the United States have trained at UCSF. This combined unit includes: 7 outpatient clinics, 4 inpatient services, a pulmonary function diagnostic center, 15 independent wet labs, 4 independent research service cores, 6 independent clinical research units, one specialty destination program, and the Nina Ireland Program in Lung Health focusing on philanthropic activities.

Required Qualifications

• BA/BS degree in a related science and knowledge of, or experience with, the basic techniques or methods required by the position; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
• Exposure to patient-related experience (can be voluntary work)
• Excellent verbal and writing skills in the English language
• Ability to organize time independently
• Ability to perform mathematical calculations accurately
• Comfortable working with human blood
• Demonstrate quick learning skills
• Demonstrate ability to organize and carry out many different tasks
• Good Communication skills - both verbal and written

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior exposure to working in a laboratory that handles human samples from patients, gained in school or related training
• Data analysis with Excel or other statistical programs (STATA, R)
• Basic understanding of statistics
• Phlebotomy experience
