Job Description

The Center for Neuroscience conducts research in the areas of molecular, cellular, systems, cognitive, and computational neuroscience and trains postdocs, graduate and undergraduate students in neuroscience and related fields. The Center consists of 24 faculty and 150+ laboratory academic and staff positions that are housed at the Center, approximately 150 affiliated faculty from across the Davis and Sacramento campuses. The Center is also the home of the Neuroscience graduate program (60 students) and supports the administrative functions for that group. Faculty/researchers are jointly appointed from CBS, L&S, and the SOM. The Center's annual expenditures well exceed $15 million. The Center is located in 35,000 sq. ft. in 4 separate buildings. Facilities include faculty research laboratories, 2 vivaria, and neuro-imaging and MRI facilities.

Job Summary


Reporting to the Executive Assistant Dean (EAD), and under the direct guidance of the Center Director, the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) manages the Center for Neuroscience and is responsible for a broad range of policy-level administrative leadership for the Center as well as oversight of business and finance, contract and grant administration, IT infrastructure, facilities, and human resources. Manage all center activities including long- and short-term planning, development activities, and direct support of the Director. Interact with faculty, staff, deans, and assistant deans from College of Biological Sciences (CBS), the School of Medicine (SOM), and College of Letters & Sciences (L&S) on a regular basis.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in related area or equivalent education and experience.
  • Experience using leadership, organizational and managerial skills to manage a research, teaching and service center that serves the entire campus and to assume responsibility for a broad range of policy level administrative leadership for the Center.
  • Experience, with strong quantitative and financial analysis skills to creatively design innovative approaches and administrative structures within a complex financial context.
  • Writing, editing, and proofreading experience to create concise, compelling decision support presentations; and to compose reports, memoranda, and other correspondence, and to analyze information and present it logically and concisely.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

  • Skills to analyze complex information or problems in an objective manner and derive logical conclusions to provide a sound basis for establishing priorities, select appropriate course of action for pursuit or recommendations to others, and resolve conflict.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills to interact with a wide variety of people in a tactful and diplomatic manner, and to communicate clearly both orally and in writing.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Education/Experience:

  • Experience managing external funding sources.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

  • Management and conflict resolution skills to effectively lead and motivate others.
  • Skills to implement academic personnel policies related to a broad range of schools/colleges represented in the Center.
  • Skills to direct and accomplish many tasks simultaneously.
