Job Description Summary

Los Angeles Times is seeking a Public Affairs Engagement Specialist who will specialize in engagement, administrative and editorial functions of Public Affairs and Community Development projects, primarily High School Insider and Reading by 9, as part of the Los Angeles Times' mission to inform, engage and empower the communities it serves.

Job Description

Responsibilities:

  • Log permission slips, input student data, and send WordPress invites to new students
  • Data entry and upkeep of HS Insider student data
  • Copy edit and process story submissions
  • Provide individualized feedback to each student story
  • Curate content to be shared and published to social media and other LAT platforms
  • Troubleshoot WordPress and user issues for students and teachers
  • Coordinate and facilitate school visits to expand to new students and schools
  • Event facilitation and execution (IRL, Public Affairs programming at the Festival of Books, Ideas Exchanges, etc.)
  • Coordinate coverage opportunities
  • Research for overall expansion and improvement of High School Insider
  • Create and distribute weekly newsletter to teachers and students
  • Manage social media accounts: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat
  • Recruit and manage volunteers for HS Insider events
  • Provide ongoing administrative support for the Student Advisory Board
  • Fulfill HS Insider store orders
  • Develop curriculum and facilitate lessons in media literacy, AP style and other journalism skills
  • Assist in HS Insider strategic goal setting and planning
  • Provide administrative support to additional Public Affairs programming where needed

Job Requirements:

  • High School Diploma and 2+ years of experience in journalism
  • Writing, researching and copy editing skills
  • Strong communication skills
  • Multimedia skills
  • Ability to work independently and as a group
  • Passion for developing core journalism skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Pursuing an Associate's or Bachelor's degree

The pay scale the Company reasonably expects to pay for this position at the time of the posting is $18.90 - $20.90 and takes into account a wide range of factors including but not limited to skill set, experience, training, licenses, certifications, and other business or organizational needs. Compensation will be determined based on the above factors along with the requirements of the position. At The L.A.
