GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT: Summarize the nature and level of work performed.

A research lab within Brigham and Women's Cardiovascular Medicine division is looking for a motivated research intern to assist in a variety of research experiments. The lab uses both in vitro (human ESC/iPSC) and in vivo (zebrafish) techniques to model various cardiovascular disorders and integrates transcriptional, (epi)genetic, metabolic, and phenotypic profiling at whole organism, tissue, and single cell-level to fully understand the earliest molecular events characterizing disease onset, follow-up their dynamic changes over time, and to identify disease biomarkers. The research intern will be expected to help with all aspects of experimental work in the lab. This work will focus on zebrafish colony maintenance and using zebrafish to conduct high-throughput screens for drug discovery.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Maintenance and genotyping of zebrafish colonies

2. Analysis of zebrafish tissue including Western blotting, immunofluorescence microscopy, DNA purification and quantitative RT-PCR.

3. Generation and purification of antibodies for ELISA assays for vascular biomarkers.

4. Preparation and maintenance of tissue cultures.

5. Preparation of laboratory reagents, chemicals, instruments and equipment.

6. Chemical informatics.

7. Time-lapse microscopy and automated image processing.

SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

* Good organizational skills, detail oriented

* Ability to communicate with multiple levels of staff and to work effectively with others in a team environment

* Ability to work independently when given an assignment.

* Sound degree of computer literacy

* Ability to methodically record data and to assist in the analysis of data using basic statistics

* Ability to perform a variety of routine tests and prioritize work

* Good interpersonal and communication skills

* Ability to demonstrate professionalism

WORKING CONDITIONS: Describe the conditions in which the work is performed.

Wet-lab/office setting.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS: (MUST be realistic, neither overstated nor understated, and related to the essential functions of the job.)

Required: High school diploma required. Currently enrolled in a College/University majoring in biology/molecular genetics/biochemistry or related degree.
