Our facility in Billerica, Massachusettsis located in the metropolitan Boston area and specializes in the designand manufacturing of advanced photonics products based on MEMS and other micro-scale optical devices. Our unique technology enables the highest system performance in the most compact and cost-effective formats in a variety of applications.

This site's Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) products are laser-based imaging tools that have transformed ophthalmic care and made notable impacts on patients in cardiology, dermatology, oncology, gastroenterology, and other medical specialties.

We are currently seeking a Principal Wafer Fabrication Engineer. Working closely with Design Engineering, M.E. and Manufacturing. This individual filling this role will join the team responsible for the development and continuous improvement of our proprietary MEMS tunable optical devices and micro-optics. The scope of responsibility centers on device fabrication (MEMs or semiconductor processing) and characterization (understanding metrology and testing) along with data tracking & analysis to support our advanced MEMS-based tunable laser development and transfer to manufacturing.

The position is hands-on and requires a high degree of cross-functional collaboration and teamwork both as a project lead as well as an individual contributor.

Main responsibilities:

  • Define, lead, and engage in engineering development of new fabrication processes to support R&D roadmap and transition to production;
  • Lead and participate in engineering activities to specify, support and improve wafer fabrication processes for production including documentation, process controls, training and support;
  • Implement and support an effective program for process monitoring and controls (SPC) and continuous improvements;
  • Develop and qualify outside fabrication services as needed/justified for meeting roadmap and surety of supply requirements;
  • Provide and coordinate engineering support for the wafer fab production technicians regarding process and equipment related issues;
  • Develop and support wafer fabrication processes for MEMs, PICs and Micro-optics;
  • Implement, document and maintain in-process routings, work instructions, tests & specifications;
  • Analyze correlations between processes (metrology data, process conditions and/or process variation) and performance (functional testing) throughout the entire value stream;
  • Track variation and process capability throughout the value stream, identify and support continuous improvement initiatives;
  • Review new specifications and analyze requirements against existing capabilities to estimate costs and yields for new products and applications;
  • Direct / indirect oversight of wafer fabrication engineering team and activities.

Requirements:

  • 5+ year's relevant industry experience in semiconductor wafer fabrication development and production;
  • Silicon MEMS device fabrication preferred;
  • MS or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Materials Science or related field;
  • Detailed working knowledge of semiconductor wafer fabrication processes, including wet and dry etching, thin films, photolithography;
  • Experience with experiment design, process control and SPC;
  • Track record in program management and technical leadership;
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work both independently and in a team environment;
  • Working knowledge of optics, lasers, MEMS devices or optoelectronic device processing preferred;
  • Experience with electrical or electro-optical testing, data access and manipulation tools;
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
