Job Description

Job Summary | Major goals and objectives.

Southern Living is seeking an Assistant Editor with a passion for Southern culture and lifestyle. The person will have writing and editing experience, a knowledge of Southern culture, and a desire to conceptualize and execute editorial ideas that provide inspiration and service to our audience. The ideal candidate is a cross-platform editor who can manage a high volume of print and digital responsibilities. This person is a self-starter, interested in different content areas, thrives in a fast-paced, ever-changing work environment, and is up for any challenge.

Essential Job Functions | Accountabilities, Actions and Expected Measurable Results

40% - Pitch, write, and report monthly column ideas that span across content pillars (food, home, travel, garden, holidays) in the magazine.

40% - Write, edit, produce, and update digital content on a daily basis.

10% - Brainstorm ideas and collaborate with the editorial team on ideas that can live across platforms.

10% - Be in the know and stay on top of happenings across the South, from new openings (restaurants, hotels, museums, etc) to anniversaries.


Minimum Qualifications and Job Requirements | All must be met to be considered.

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism or related field or equivalent training and/or experience.

Experience:

  • 1-2 years experience that demonstrates exceptional writing, reporting, and researching skills.

Specific Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Experience in researching, reporting, and fact checking.

  • Knowledge in print and digital media.

  • Experience or familiarity working in a digital cms a plus.

  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Interest in covering The South and Southern culture.
