Job Description

The laboratory of Drs. Choi and Kates is seeking a well-qualified, driven research personnel. The successful candidate will be expected to be proficient in a large repertoire of research techniques that will allow them to work in both an independent manner as well as part of a collaborative team within the laboratory and also with collaborators at JHU and other institutions. The position will require the use of scientific knowledge to learn techniques/methods of the lab and/or new techniques/methods. While many aspects of the position's duties will utilize standard laboratory tasks and/or the completion routine assays following common or established protocols and procedures, this position may also be called upon to make significant scientific contribution to the development of new research protocols or the modification of existing protocols to improve efficiency/productivity. Additionally, they will be expected to gain problem solving skills through progressive training, understanding of the research, and experience. In addition to their research responsibilities, the position will also play a role in various aspects of managing the laboratory.


Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work independently to develop new assays and laboratory methods in support of the laboratory efforts.
  • Serve as the lead bench scientist and data analysis on one or more projects at a time, while also performing other tasks that are related to other ongoing projects in the lab or on tasks that are for the overall benefit of the lab and its members. In their efforts, they will be expected to make significant/important contributions to various aspects of research efforts. This may include troubleshooting, independent decisions and training/guidance of other lab personnel. Additionally, this will require that they will stay up to date on relevant published research and to incorporate recent findings into the development of their research. Run lab tests and complete measurements assigned. This includes the set-up of experiments based on defined standards, the collection of project data, analyzing and interpreting results, making conclusions based on the collected data, and designing follow-up experiments.
  • Present research findings and data at regularly occurring lab meetings. They will also be asked to write and/or compile data/figures for peer-reviewed as well as potentially present research findings and data at research conferences as directed by Drs. Kates/Choi.
  • The position may also be asked to prepare, test, and maintain standard laboratory equipment. Perform related laboratory maintenance, monitoring inventory of supplies, cleaning equipment, and/or ordering of research/laboratory supplies.
  • Other duties as assigned.




Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or related field
  • Two years laboratory experience performing relevant techniques.
  • Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with working knowledge of molecular biology
  • Experience with programming languages used for scientific data analysis, including such as R.

Starting Salary Range: $40,900 - $71,600 Annually ($56,250 targeted; Commensurate with experience)
