Description:

Position Summary Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse II (LPN), the Nursing Technician delivers patient care utilizing the Relationship-Based Care model as a framework. The Nurse Technician provides care and takes initiative to improve patient outcomes by supporting Shared Leadership, Evidence Based Practice, Relationship Based Care and standards of nursing excellence in clinical practice. Through therapeutic relationships with patients, families, self and colleagues, the Nurse Technician functions as an interdisciplinary team member who provides patient care and fulfills unit and organizational goals.

Duties & Responsibilities

Clinical
Provides patient support and education, as needed, throughout their stay in the Short Stay Unit.
Assists the RN with duties
Completes forms according to Short Stay Unit and UI Health guidelines.
Enters electronic procedure documentation according to Short Stay Unit and UI Health guidelines.
Restocks supply area and POCT room as needed.
Assists in the pre/post area as needed, including patient care and restocking of patient care areas and nursing station.
Assumes responsibility for their own professional growth.
Assists with quality assurance data collection and review related to pre and post procedure care.
Provides documentation to facilitate proper patient billing.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Transports patients to facilitate throughput and improve patient experience.
Provides support at the front desk with answering phones and other duties assigned to them by the charge nurse.

Maintains conditions of employment (Nurse Assistant Certificate, BLS and other required unit-specific requirements).
Organizational
Adheres to the UI Health's Code of Conduct.
Treats patients/families, staff, students and visitors with respect and dignity.
Adheres to Nursing's time, overtime and attendance policies.
Completes electronic learning modules and related programs as assigned by UI Health by established date
Complies with University Health Services TB and fit-testing requirements
Utilizes established communication channels/chain of command to escalate or resolve patient care problems.
Identifies recurring clinical practice and/or related unit problems and participates in problem solving and resolution.
Education/Research
Collaborates with other staff to identify, promote and provide positive learning experiences for staff and students
Serves as a resource to other nursing staff and students
Accesses Medical Center intranet/outlook for relevant communication and to review and interpret changes in policy, procedure and other information pertinent to practice
Supports nursing and multidisciplinary research efforts conducted on the unit and at UI Health.
Takes responsibility for continued professional growth/development by identification of learning needs and initiates strategies to meet such needs.
Reporting Structure
This person works under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) who provides direction and supervision on a continual basis. The Director/Manager/CNCII, acting as coach and mentor, provides additional direction, guidance, and feedback regarding practice and performance. The employee's performance is evaluated annually in writing and more frequently if needed. The employee and Director/Manager meet

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

  1. High school graduation or equivalent.
  2. Possession of a CNA license from an accredited institution/school/program.
  3. Registered and active in the
    Illinois Department of Public Health - Health Care Work Registry


  4. Current AHA BLS/CPR and other required unit specific certifications
  5. Effective communication skills (oral and written) that facilitate therapeutic relationships between patients, family, and health care providers
  6. Intermediate computer skills with the ability to become proficient in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) with on-the-job training
  7. Excellent attendance, interpersonal skills and work history required.


Preferred Qualifications
Current BLS
2+ years experience in a hospital setting required
