JOB SUMMARY:
Under general supervision of the Golf Course Superintendent, the Mechanical Technician II performs skilled mechanic work on a variety of golf course maintenance equipment for The Clustered Spires Golf Club-a municipal golf course in The City of Frederick.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Oversees a comprehensive preventive maintenance program for golf course maintenance equipment.
  • Inspects, diagnoses and repairs mechanical defects/failures in various golf course maintenance equipment including, diesel-, electric-and gasoline-powered automobiles, trucks, trenchers, sweepers, rollers, mowers, and other mechanical equipment used in utility work.
  • Instructs and/or trains golf course maintenance workers regarding preventive maintenance, and the proper cleaning of and safe operation of equipment.
  • Prioritizes equipment repair and maintenance work.
  • Oversees and maintains a comprehensive preventive maintenance program within budget on all equipment, and purchases repair parts and replacement supplies.
  • Maintains complete records for equipment and parts inventory purchases, equipment conditions, costs of repairs and preventive maintenance for all equipment.
  • Spot checks equipment for performance on the course, frequently makes emergency repairs to equipment on the course, and services or supervises routine servicing of equipment prior to use.
  • Performs or oversee reel grinding when needed.
  • Oversees the shop area maintenance.
  • Communicates any needs or problems relating to the maintenance or repair of equipment to the Superintendent
  • Places safety as a top priority and maintains a safe and clean service area and maintenance building
  • Regulates employees' safe use of equipment in absence of superintendent.
  • Drives vehicles and equipment in compliance with City policies and with all local, state and federal regulations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
  • Six (6) months of experience in small equipment repair or comparable work.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATES AND/OR LICENSES:
  • Vehicle Operator's license with satisfactory driving record that meets insurability standards of the City's insurance carrier is required. The employee must maintain the license for the duration of their employment.
REQUIRED SKILLS (Communication/Language; Mathematical; Computer; etc.):
  • Thorough knowledge of occupational hazards, safety precautions, and safety regulations related to the operation and repair of vehicles and equipment.
  • Thorough knowledge of the methods, techniques, and practices of the fleet maintenance and repair.
  • Thorough knowledge of the materials, supplies, equipment, and practices used in the maintenance of fleet assets.
  • Thorough knowledge of the operation and care of equipment, tools, and supplies related to fleet maintenance and of work hazards and precautionary measures.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including the ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, vehicle/equipment users, contractors and the public.
  • Ability to use tools used in various fleet maintenance activities and to teach others their application and use.

OTHER DESIRABLES:
  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
  • ASE Certification.
  • Working knowledge of light and heavy maintenance equipment and automotive apparatuses.
  • Working knowledge of the theory, care, and operation of internal combustion engines and mowing equipment.
  • Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the profession.
  • Knowledge of and/or ability to play the game of golf and understand how job performance affects the playing conditions of the golf course.
  • Skill in the use of a variety of equipment repair tools, and the making of various types of mechanical repair.
  • Ability to diagnose mechanical troubles and determine appropriate maintenance work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and keep business records.

Specific vision requirements require visual acuity within the normal range-with or without accommodation. Vision requirements also include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds and visual cues or signals at normal speaking levels with or without correction. The jobholder is required to exchange information using oral communication.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee will perform work in an indoor and outdoor work setting. The employee will have frequent exposure to varying outside weather conditions and extremes in temperature. Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as odors, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, hazardous materials, toxic agents, machinery, heavy equipment, vibrations, or traffic hazards. The employee will have moderate exposure to insects and wildlife. The noise level in this work setting is high.
