, an industry leader and the second largest municipal utility in Florida committed to serving the community and the environment, is presently seeking a Engineer- Communication Systems to join the Trans,Substation & Sys Protect division.

We are looking for a flexible and organized professional to provide engineering support and design within the communication systems area.

In this role, you will be responsible for implementing standards for substation automation, SCADA, fiber, networking, intelligent electronic devices, multiplexers, battery chargers, and various communication equipment.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Bachelor's degree in Communications Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or related engineering degree from an ABET accredited college or university;
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Utility experience (preferred)
  • Classwork in communications and power systems (preferred)

Salary Range: $80,771.04 - $100,963.52 annually (commensurate upon experience)

Job Purpose:

Provide engineering support and design within the communication systems area; implement standards for substation automation, SCADA,fiber, networking, intelligent electronic devices, multiplexers, battery chargers, and various communication equipment. Develop and maintain sufficient level of expertise in use of CAD software for efficient production of engineering work. Procure, track, and monitor communication equipment, Remote Terminal Units, servers, multiplexers and fiber optic and microwave communications infrastructure. Support communication technicians during installation and maintenance of equipment.

Primary Functions:

  • Assist communication technician in the installation, troubleshooting, modification, and repair of communication infrastructure equipment;
  • Administer and update all technical drawings and documentation associated with communication infrastructure;
  • Create fiber construction estimates;
  • Specify and purchase communication materials required for capital projects (Remote Terminal Units, OPGW and ADSS fiber cable and termination equipment, Substation Multiplexer equipment, etc.);
  • Develop drawings and installation of equipment within substations;
  • Create and monitor standards and specification for RTU's, OPGW Fiber, ADSS Fiber, Multiplexers, and associated hardware to support substation communication infrastructure;
  • Research and evaluate new communication technologies;
  • Support fiber optic and microwave communications infrastructure;
  • Create designs to upgrade legacy or unsupported communication equipment;
  • Calculate loss budgets on fiber optics, return loss, and wave division multiplexing;
  • Update SONET/MPLS manual and traffic tables;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Technical Requirements:

  • Working knowledge of all, but not limited to, the following:
    • Substation drawings;
    • Manufacturer user manuals;
    • Communication Systems standards;
    • SCADA system;
    • Cisco networking documentation and configuration;
    • Fiber Manager Database;
    • Fiber Database Spreadsheet;
    • Ability to make arithmetic computations using whole numbers, fractions and decimals, and compute rates, ratios, and percentages;
    • Ability to use Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.) and standard office equipment.
  • Familiarity with all, but not limited to, the following:
    • Laptop computer for programming and setup of communication equipment;
    • Substation automation hardware;
    • RF communication systems, Motorola radio system;
    • communication systems, hand held radios;
    • Cisco Switches;
    • Terminal Servers;
    • Related industry, organizational and departmental policies, practices, and procedures; legal guidelines, ordinances, and laws;

Education/ Certification/ Years of Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Communications Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or related engineering degree from an ABET accredited college or university;
  • Valid Driver's License.

Working Conditions:

This job may be exposed to outdoor weather conditions, extreme heat (non-weather), risk of electrical shock, and insects. This job may occasionally work in high, precarious places; work in confined work spaces, and wet, humid conditions (non-weather).

Physical Requirements:

This job requires sitting, walking, standing, repetitive motions, and bending/stooping. This job requires speaking and hearing, reading, writing, typing, and detailed inspection. This job may lift up to forty (40) pounds and may drive a company vehicle.
