ChristianaCare is looking for a full-time Groundskeeper to maintain the grounds of hospital in a clean, safe, and orderly condition for patients, employees, and visitors.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Maintains grounds by performing multiple tasks including cutting grass, mulching plants, pruning, watering, planting, picking up litter and debris, emptying trash receptacles, sweeping walks, roads, and entryways maintaining a neat appearance.
  • Drives pickup truck, street sweeper and/or backhoe.
  • Operates and performs maintenance on power lawn mowers and other equipment such as changing oil, parts, lubrication, and adjustment.
  • Cares for tools, keeps equipment clean, and in good working order.
  • Cleans drains, position signs, inspects site amenities, performs minor repairs and adjustments on these items as needed throughout the entire campus.
  • Oversees snow removal operations for the campus, including plowing, salting, snow blowing, and sweeping.
  • Works under severe weather conditions such as, but not limited to, clearing drains, and securing site in high wind conditions, snow/ice storms.
  • Performs assigned work safely, adhering to established departmental safety rules and practices. Reports to supervisor, in a timely manner, any unsafe activities, conditions, hazards, or safety violations that may cause injury to oneself, other employees, patients and visitors.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Knowledge, Skill, and Ability Requirements
  • Knowledge of cleaning, maintenance, and gardening methods, materials, and equipment.
  • Knowledge of motorized equipment such as push and riding mowers, string trimmers, edgers and hedge shears.
  • Knowledge of proper use of hand tools such as hammers, wrenches, picks, shovels, spades, rakes, loppers, saws, or similar tools.
  • Knowledge of irrigation techniques using sprinklers, hoses, and flooding methods.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • This position is responsible to be an active member of the emergency response team.
  • Must have the ability to perform work accurately and complete all tasks in a professional manner.
  • Work with minimal direct supervision.
  • Prioritize workload and solve problems independently.
  • Handle varying workloads to meet changing schedules and deadlines.
  • Discretion and confidentiality are required.

Hours: Day Shift 7:00am - 3:30pm (may require off hour work)

Education and Experience Requirements:

High school diploma or equivalent is required. Vocational or trade school experience is desired. Must have basic computer skills including Microsoft applications.

Valid driver's license.

Working Conditions:
  • Exposure to extreme heat, cold, dust, dirt, rain, snow, wind, noise, and fumes. Occasional exposure to extended and/or unusual hours. 95% of work performed outdoors.
Physical Demands:
  • Minimum lifting requirement of 80lbs. May be exposed to extreme temperature changes. Must have manual dexterity and visual acuity to manipulate equipment and supplies. Must have complete unrestricted physical mobility to access the entire facility and related properties. Must be able to assume positions, such as standing, climbing, bending, or stooping for extended periods of time. Must be able to hear and orally communicate on the telephone and two-way radio system.
