DESCRIPTION

Reporting to the Director of Marketing for Recreation, the Marketing and Communications Specialist participates in the implementation of marketing and communications for the department of Recreation and its various programs. Participates in the development of a marketing and communications calendar around department programs, events and initiatives that would reach target audiences through a variety of communication mediums. The position assists with event and marketing submissions, internal and external outreach, as well as department promotions, materials, and products designed to create awareness with the campus, medical center community, and/or general public. Keep up to date with solid understanding of industry standards, best practices, and trends.

The Marketing and Communications Specialist uses marketing concepts and multiple applications and platforms to perform non-complex responsibilities such as planning, developing and implementing basic marketing plans, drafting promotional or marketing materials, working on marketing events, conducting basic market research, including but not limited to executing social media strategies and posts, preparation and creation of digital media, web site content, communication and deliverables related to department sponsors and partners, content creation for blogs, newsletters, email blasts and press releases, solicitation of advertising, graphic design support, etc. Supports the management of departmental and University use of the Recreation brand; ordering of all branded materials including promotion items, apparel, and signage; collaboration and assistance on all design materials; participation in other campus departmental committees. Participates with meeting facilitation and provides customer service through personal appearances/ presentations at a variety of on and off campus events, orientations, meetings, and conferences promoting departmental activities.

Th position works with a marketing team comprised of professional and student staff. Assist in hiring, training, developing, as well as providing work direction and editorial oversight for the student staff to ensure projects are completed in an accurate and timely manner.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

  • Solid knowledge of marketing principles, concepts, strategies and best practices. Including branding promotions, messages, and guidelines. Demonstrated ability to support and conduct promotional efforts, identifying potential customers, and attracting them to specific programs/events/functions using print, email, digital, web and other mediums.

  • Solid knowledge of institutional products and services.

  • Knowledge of the campus and / or medical center including its achievements, mission, vision, goals, objectives and infrastructure.

  • Knowledge of customer service standards / procedures.

  • Organizational skills and skills in file creation, maintenance and management. Effective use of computer for data collection, graphic design and publications creation, knowledge of relevant software.

  • Written and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to exercise tact, mature judgment, diplomacy, and flexibility to promote positive working relationships and job effectiveness. Ability to gather information and effectively communicate using a variety of platforms and mediums.

  • Thorough knowledge of marketing mediums and funding sources. Demonstrated experience and skills with effective marketing tools and targeted marketing for promotions for the department and/or specific program areas.

  • Demonstrated ability to use journalistic style to write interesting, accurate and comprehensive news and feature articles. Demonstrated experience in writing for Web, eMarketing activities, and utilizing electronic communication tools.

  • Strong project management skills. Demonstrated skill in organizing, prioritizing and maintaining diverse workload, establishing meeting goals and work schedule deadlines and independently following tasks through to completion.

  • Strong skills in event and media activities management. Knowledge of effective event management and promotional concepts for various size events in an academic environment.

  • Solid experience with brand management, guidelines, templates, etc. Including effective communication and strategy related to the department brand and working with licensing departments and personnel.

  • Strong knowledge of the practices for effecting marketing communications and branding promotions to support branding messages.

  • Experience with student staff including but not limited to training and development, mentorship, appreciation, and delegating work in an orderly, systematic manner with defined expectations and results. Ability to monitor performance as necessary.

  • Proven ability to provide successful publicity and promotions for Recreation programs on a campus/community wide level.

  • Knowledge of purchasing procedures, ability to effectively negotiate and communicate with vendors. Knowledge of bidding procedures for producing promotional material.

  • Knowledge of financial principles and the ability to apply them effectively in managing a program that is funded by varies sources and limitations.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Job Offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.

  • Must be willing and able to work a variable schedule including evening and weekend hours and other special projects that will require work to be performed outside the standard business hours of operation (8:00 am - 4:30 pm).

  • This position has been identified as a Mandated Reporter pursuant to the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA) and requires immediate reporting of physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, or neglect of anyone under the age of 18. It is the responsibility of the Mandated Reporter to ensure that they obtain proper training in order to fulfull their reporting responsibilites as required by CANRA and Unversity policy and to complete and submit the required reports to the UC San Diego Police Department without delay.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $56,700 - $97,500 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $27.16 - $46.70

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
