U.S. Facilities, Inc., a consolidated facility management/infrastructure service organization, is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented individual to join our team as a Concrete Lab - Engineering Technician II. In this role, you will provide essential support to our research scientists in conducting experiments, analyzing data, and assisting with various laboratory and field-testing activities. This position offers an excellent opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research in the field of concrete technology and transportation infrastructure. This position is a 12-month position and is renewed each year as necessary pending renewal approval with VDOT. The role of this position will be to accomplish, on a routine basis, the following responsibilities:

  • Assist research scientists in mixing concrete batches, casting samples, and conducting experiments according to established standards or in-house test procedures.
  • Assist with the preparation of test specimens and ensure adherence to quality control measures.
  • Perform field testing and data collection, ensuring accurate and reliable results.
  • Maintain, calibrate, and use laboratory equipment, ensuring proper functioning and accuracy of measurements.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols in weighing, lifting, mixing, testing and maintain a clean and organized work environment.
  • Report findings and appropriate documentation to research scientists.
  • Coordinate and plan assigned work with multiple lab assistants and students.
  • Any other duties assigned by a supervisor and/or USF Senior Project Manager.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • An associate degree or technical school certificate in a relevant field, such as civil engineering is preferred.

Experience/Skill Sets:

  • Experience in the preparation of test specimens and familiarity with laboratory and field-testing procedures and equipment.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to follow instructions accurately.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Physical capability to lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Some knowledge of mathematics and simple statistical analysis.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word and Excel.
  • Experience working with concrete.
  • Familiarity with testing related to concrete material according to ACI, ASTM and AASHTO standards of testing.
  • ACI concrete field testing and strength testing technician certifications.
  • Prior experience in a laboratory or research setting is advantageous.

Work Conditions:

  • 90-day probation period
  • VDOT/Industry Training upon hire
  • Potential for significant periods of sitting or standing
  • May be subject to short or no-notice work assignments
  • Monitored performance with routine evaluation

NOTE: This position is designed as essential and, as such, all duties associated with this job are required during emergency situations which may include but are not limited to inclement weather, disaster response and emergency operations. VDOT/Project Management will determine when essential positions are required.

Valid driver's license is required. DMV records check is required. Pre-employment drug screen is required. Fingerprint-based Criminal History Records Check is required.
