National 4-H Council is the private sector, non-profit partner of the Cooperative Extension System and 4-H National Headquarters located at the National Institute of Food and Agriculture within the United States Department of Agriculture.

Position Summary

Council seeks energetic onsite program assistants (PA) to participate in the Citizenship Washington Focus educational program, an intense and exciting learning experience for youth and adults from all over the United States and worldwide. The position includes two weeks of training and two weeks of programming. The position begins May 13, 2024, with a virtual kick-off and introduction call. There are two PA roles, one role is guiding tours, and the other is facilitating workshops. During programming weeks, the PAs are expected to work with assigned state delegation for each week for the entire stay working in collaboration with each group's coordinator and Council program and planning staff to facilitate Council's educational tours and curricula to youth group. Additionally, the PAs chosen as tour guides under this program will be required to pass a Council-approved D.C. tour guide knowledge exam and become licensed Class B tour guides for the Washington D.C. metro area as a condition of their employment. National 4-H Council will pay for the tour guide license. Multiple positions are available.


Responsibilities

Tour Guide Duties

In-person work begins May 30, 2024, and concludes June 27, 2024.

  • Learn routes and educational information about the monuments and memorials in Washington D.C. and create customized talking points to lead trips on these points of interest throughout the city, facilitating participants' learning from these educational opportunities and how to showcase leadership and democracy.
  • Serve as a primary liaison between Council and each group during their stay in regard to tours and offsite field trips
  • Communicate and plan with workshop program assistants to ensure that curricula and learnings between the two experiences are shared and a seamless experience for program group participants.
  • Lead educational tours and field trips including providing route directions to bus drivers, distributing event and meal tickets, and transportation and parking logistics.

Program Facilitator Duties

In-person work begins June 6, 2024, and concludes June 27, 2024.

  • Meet with adult and group leaders to assist and orient groups as they arrive
  • Lead educational workshops conducted on the hotel premises, including checking room set-up and arrangements, and audio-visual equipment.
  • Assist with developing a specific curriculum for ongoing programs.
  • Assist with providing recreational and other free-time activities for participants; facilitate workshops and any other program needs.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Must have a high school diploma or GED.
  • Prior experience with public speaking and presentation skills.
  • Must be at least 18 years old, be flexible, and work well with others under pressure.
  • Must be a citizen of the United States with proficiency and fluency in English.
  • Must be able to satisfactorily pass the background check process and meet the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs' medical and physical requirements.
  • Must be able to pass the tour guide exam (Tour Guide role only).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Education beyond high school with courses in political science, communications, history, and education.

  • Must be able to read maps and use public transportation systems, including buses and trains.
  • Must be able to assist guests with luggage or bags as necessary.
  • Must be able to lift 20 to 40 pounds.

Video Response Best Practices

  1. A big part of the PA position is storytelling through commentary while leading tours of various memorials and sites throughout the city. The video should demonstrate your ability to teach or explain the context of your chosen topic as well as your story-telling skills.
  2. Let your personality come through! We do not recommend you share your presentation in a slideshow format, as it would not convey your true abilities. There are many other ways to showcase your teaching ability. Be creative!
  3. When uploading your video to YouTube, make sure to click on "Unlisted" to ensure the video is only visible to the person(s) you shared it with for review.

Benefits and Compensation

  • King room accommodations will be provided by Council for all PAs in Bethesda, MD.
  • PAs will also be compensated at $17.50/hour.
  • Once hired, if PA does not live in the D.C. metro area, transportation will be provided.
  • Some meals will also be provided. A detailed list will be provided upon hire.
