Freedom of Information Act Analyst

Reviews incoming Freedom of Information Act and Privacy Act (FOIA/PA) requests to determine subject matter and appropriateness for the Department of Justice and recommends appropriate disposition, e.g., appropriate for referral, appropriate for records searches, additional consultation with the requester or other offices. Interprets and applies applicable statutes, rules, regulations, and executive orders as they pertain to FOIA/PA for initial processing.

Compensation & Benefits:

Estimated Starting Salary Range for Freedom of Information Act Analyst: $90K- $98K.

Pay commensurate with experience.

Full time benefits include Medical, Dental, Vision, 401K and other possible benefits as provided. Benefits are subject to change with or without notice.

Freedom of Information Act Analyst Responsibilities Include:

  • Researches and prepares a variety of written materials and correspondence related to requests for information under the FOIA/PA.
  • Prepares timely responses to incoming FOIA requesters as assigned.
  • Performs review and conducts searches, as necessary, to locate information responsive to FOIA and PA requests.
  • Conducts factual research of defined scope and complexity utilizing various sources of legal reference to supply necessary information for inclusion in responses to the public, Members of Congress and other federal agencies, with the assistance of government FOIA staff.
  • Performs records management and e-discovery functions, including researching records management and e-discovery obligations, assisting in updating records schedules, assisting with e-discovery projects, and facilitating the transfer of records, as needed.
  • Reviews division records, databases and entries to assist in responding to and maintaining the administrative of FOIA/PA requests.
  • Files, retrieves, and copies case file materials; tabs, numbers, labels, and assembles documents.
  • Collects, organizes, analyzes and prepares records for FOIA processing.
  • Maintains accurate notes and documentation regarding the status of multiple requests and projects.
  • Maintains the OJP FOIA webpage.
  • May perform other job-related duties assigned as needed.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Freedom of Information Act Analyst Experience, Education, Skills, Abilities requested:

  • BA, BS in a related field; or paralegal certification and experience in lieu of degree
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience working in the FOIA/PA arena in a professional office environment or related experience.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability in using Microsoft applications (MS Word, PowerPoint and Excel).
  • Knowledge of legal research tools such as LEXIS and Westlaw.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize large masses of materials according to a logical scheme or in accordance with established procedures.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of a government office and network environment, including but not limited to, data processing environments.
  • Knowledge of e-discovery procedures and tools preferred.
  • Demonstrated analytical and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Must pass pre-employment qualifications of Cherokee Federal
