Job Description

The Office of International Services (OIS) is seeking a Sr. International Services Advisor. This position serves as a senior advisor on F-1 student and J-1 exchange visitor visa categories and is responsible for advising, document processing, and policymaking related to those non-immigrant populations. The Sr. International Services Advisor ensures the University is in compliance with all requirements pertaining to international students as set forth by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Department of State, Social Security Administration, and other government agencies.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities


Advise international students (undergraduate, graduate, and professional) and exchange visitors individually and in groups on all matters pertaining to their immigration status, related concerns, and administrative and cultural issues.

  • Counsel OIS clients regarding F and J immigration regulations.
  • Advise on laws pertaining to employment eligibility, Social Security Numbers, driver's licenses, and related issues.
  • Provide advice on other individual concerns related to OIS clients' status as international students at JHU.
  • Provide guidance on potential issues involving cultural adaptation and culture shock.


Serve as Designated School Official and Alternate Responsible Officer managing a complex caseload of F-1 and J-1 immigration requests.

  • Process immigration benefits for international students and exchange visitors.
  • Generate immigration documentation (I-20, DS-2019 forms) for new and continuing international students and exchange visitors.
  • Provide advising during assigned advising hours and scheduled appointments.
  • Manage assigned reports and alerts in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS).
  • Remain abreast of regulatory changes and development as they affect international students.


Participate in Formal and Informal Outreach for the Office of International Services.

  • Create and deliver programming on immigration benefits, cultural adjustment, and related issues for students and exchange visitors.
  • Provide regulatory, procedural, and cultural training for University faculty and staff.
  • Consult with outside agency representatives, sponsoring agencies, government officials, and employers of students--on behalf of the students.


Assist in the administration of the Office of International Services.

  • Serve on assigned OIS committees, working groups, and task forces.
  • Participate in office strategic planning and make recommendations.
  • Serve as liaison to academic and administrative units as assigned.
  • Represent OIS on University committees.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of formal office policies and procedures and disseminate that information to affected parties including international students, scholars, faculty, and academic departments.
  • Prepare and update informational materials.
  • Assist in the training of new OIS staff and student assistants.
  • Occasional oversight of OIS front line client service operations to ensure efficient and effective workflow.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree required.
  • Additional experience may be substituted for education.
  • Five years of related experience and familiarity with international education in general.
  • Advanced knowledge of U.S. Immigration laws and regulations pertaining to F and J students and their dependents.
  • Knowledge of procedures for employment, change of visa status, reinstatement, and other complex F and J authorizations and processes.
  • Must be U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident to meet regulatory requirements as a Designated School Official and Alternate Responsible Officer.
  • Must demonstrate extensive regulatory experience in an office responsible for interpreting and applying government regulations and statutes pertaining to non-immigrant students.
  • Experience with use of MS Office applications, especially Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Experience in use of university student and personnel information systems.
  • Familiarity with FERPA regulations.
  • Must be willing to travel to participate in professional meetings and conferences.
  • Ability to work independently and manage complex projects.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with diverse groups and individuals.
  • Must have extremely good time management and customer service skills.
  • Strong interpersonal, collaborative, organizational, analytical, and oral/written communication skills.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's Degree (Bachelor's or Master's Degree in a field related to international education also preferred).
  • Experience with use of SUNAPSIS case management software.

Starting Salary Range: $55,200 - $96,600 Annually ($75,000 targeted; Commensurate with experience)
