Overview:

The primary purpose of this position is to serve as an electronics technician responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing high-end video teleconferencing, audio, and other telecommunications. Installer Level Tech 3 should be familiar with and know how to accomplish the following tasks through on-the-job training and formal certifications for the Technician level. This level of employee will have the capability to perform site surveys, develop job plans, demonstrate and follow common safety practices, have the capability to supervise other technicians, serve as a site superintendent, and provide customer service and technical support through analysis and problem-solving over the phone, in-house, and remote support.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Perform Site Surveys. Use blueprints/floor plans to conduct visual site inspections. Prepare site survey report to include local support facilities for parts, living, and rental requirements.
  • Develop Job Plans. Determine materials/delivery schedules in conjunction with the project manager. Develop tool/equipment lists. Review manpower requirements bid for a job and evaluate. Calculate completion dates. Be able to utilize Microsoft schedule software.
  • Build Closets - Determine equipment layouts. Mount/install backboards. Mount/install Terminal Strips. Mount/install equipment racks/patch panels. Install optical fiber panels/hardware.
  • Grounding Infrastructure - Know local and National Electrical Code basics. Connect to ground planes and busbars where specified by the Electrical Contractor or Building Facilities. Perform equipment-grounding tests.
  • Installation of Cable Support Systems - Ability to install cable support systems to include "Hilti" fastening systems, cable trays, ladder racks, j-hooks, and Bridle/D-rings.
  • Installation of overhead AV Infrastructure - Projection systems, projection screens (wall and ceiling mounted), speakers, microphones, displays (wall and ceiling mounted), and other functions as required to meet the needs of the project, following guidelines recommended by AVIXA, formerly InfoComm International CTS practices and other Federal, State and Local requirements.
  • Installation of Field Source Connections - Install floor, wall, and AV furniture interfaces.
  • Pulling Cable - Pull field cable in provided risers and under raised flooring. Basic knowledge for pulling cable in conduit, open ceiling, and inner duct for fiber optic cable.
  • Knowledge of Balanced Fire Protection - knowledge of fire walls, fire barriers, fire partitions, smoke barriers, horizontal assemblies, and the proper use of Firestop.
  • Equipment Rack Termination - Organize, dress, terminate, and label field cables to industry standards
  • Cable and Equipment Termination - Knowledge of RS232 / 485, UTP and STP (Cat5e Cat6), Terminal strips, Patch Panels, Audio, Video, and Fiber. Knowledge of Telco terminations is a plus (Krone, Bix, 110/66 block).
  • System Testing - Knowledge to test Category 5/5e/6/6e using network testers for validation or certification. Knowledge to test optical fiber, single mode/multimode, using Light Source/Power Meter and OTDR. Knowledge of Volt-ohm meter- diagnose open, shorted, and split pairs as well as control (RS232).
  • Retrofits - Identify active circuits. Implement and perform a cutover plan.
  • Local Area Networks - Demonstrate knowledge of LAN topologies (Ethernet, token ring). LAN ANSI/TIA/EIA cabling standards (569-A, 606, 607). LAN components (Servers, Hubs, Routers, Bridges)
  • Maintenance -Provide technical support to properly diagnose trouble to determine whether a problem is equipment failure versus user error and thus minimize downtime and unnecessary tech dispatches.
  • Administrative Tasks - Document test results. Document "as-builts". Complete daily reports. Inventory job materials/report missing, damaged materials to designated PM.
  • Remain Current on Industry Practices - Join professional trade organizations. Keep up with standards and codes.
  • Safety - Demonstrate common safety practices IAW Unicom Government safety manual and OSHA regulations. Attend training/safety meetings.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Ability to serve as site lead for various project installations
  • Ability to train, direct and mentor other technicians and peers.
Qualifications

Education and/or Experience:

  • AS in EE or related degree/certifications or related experience
  • 5+ years of AV/IP/Unified Comms experience

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

  • Avixa CTS certification is required.
  • Avixa CTS-I certification is highly desired.
  • Other industry and manufacturer certifications: Avixa CTS-D, Crestron, AMX, Extron, C#, ClearOne, Biamp Cisco, or Polycom are strongly preferred.

Travel Requirements:

  • This position is a 75% traveling position.
  • Have or obtain U.S. Passport or "Real ID" (for travel purposes).

Security Clearance:

SECRET Level Required

  • Must have a current US Government SECRET Personnel Security Clearance or be able to successfully complete a U.S. government-administered investigation.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Must also be able to maintain a US Government SECRET clearance.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to be able to occasionally stand; walk; sit; use hands and/or fingers to handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; operate office equipment, reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop; kneel; talk or hear; taste or smell.

  • Ability to lift 24 to 50 pounds on a daily basis, occasionally lifting over 60 pounds.
  • Ability to climb ladders and scaffolding to install and repair overhead AV components.

Work Environment:

General office environment.

Various customer locations including existing and newly constructed offices, conference rooms, IT server rooms and closets, auditoriums, and other locations specific to the project.
