The Shift Coordinator Respiratory is based out of the Respiratory Care Services cost center. The Shift Coordinator works under the direction of RCS Clinical Manager and the Medical Director. The Shift Coordinator will act in accordance to established standards and practices.

The Shift Coordinator will coordinate daily clinical activities of the shift for Respiratory Care Services, including development & tracking of shift assignments, response to requests for assistance from ancillary departments, assures timely and coordinated response to all emergent alerts, and addresses problems on the shift as they occur. The Shift Coordinator should have extensive experience in all areas of Neonatal and Pediatric Care to support sound clinical judgment, troubleshooting, and the ability to act as a resource to frontline therapists as needed throughout the hospital.

The Shift Coordinator will develop the schedule for frontline Respiratory Therapists working with the Clinical Manager to assure tasks are completed according to Union and Hospital guidelines. The Shift Coordinator will support education, training, and competency initiatives required for Respiratory Therapists as implemented by Respiratory Care Leadership. The Shift Coordinator will also support department activities required to assure compliance with The Joint Commission and Department of Health regulations.

The Shift Coordinator will take a bedside assignment as necessary to ensure adequate staffing coverage on the shift. The Shift Coordinator will also cover gaps in staffing for Primary Transport RT when necessary. The Shift Coordinator communicates appropriately with all members of the healthcare team and escalates concerns to RCS Leadership as applicable. The Shift Coordinator reports directly to the RCS Clinical Manager.

Qualifications Minimum Education
Associate's Degree Completion of a minimum of two years of college training in an AMA approved Respiratory Care Program. (Required)
Bachelor's Degree Respiratory Care or other health related field. (Preferred)

Minimum Work Experience
5 years At least 5 years of Neonatal and Pediatric Critical Care experience in a pediatric setting or have 6 years minimum experience in an adult critical care setting. Pediatric experience is preferred. Must have experience in pediatric diagnostic and treatment of patients of various pulmonary etiologies. Candidate must qualify at RCP Level III status (minimum) according to the RCS Clinical Ladder; RCP Level IV preferred prior to applying for the position. The candidate must also have a good performance standing. (Required)

Required Skills/Knowledge
Must have an excellent understanding of hemodynamics, intravascular homeostasis and ABGs and as those factors relate to patient care.
Exceptional ability to verbalize, in a comprehensive manner, clinical, technical, and administrative issues are required.
Must have the ability to organize, establish priorities and to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Must be decisive and able to perform under tense, emotional and stressful situations.
Must have ability to problem solve clinical situations to include patient conditions and needs.
Must demonstrate compassion and a customer service orientation when dealing with families, patients and co-workers.

Must have the ability to perform mathematical calculations.
Basic computer skills are a must. Other computer skills to include entry level Excel and data base management preferred.
Must maintain clinical skills and maintain required continuing education credits for license and as required by the Respiratory Department to include advanced levels of respiratory practice in Acute Care, Emergency RoomUnits (PICU, NICU, CICU).
Must meet the clinical and physical requirements to participate in the Neonatal & Pediatric Transport Teams. Must have physical ability to perform all treatment modalities.
Must have physical ability to move, lift and carry patients, in addition, stamina to endure frequently long periods of standing and walking.
Must be able to lift and move equipment and supplies >50 lbs. Proficient at handling air, oxygen, and electrical shutdowns with respiratory devices, planned or emergency.

Required Licenses and Certifications
Registered Respiratory Therapist Credentialed by the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC).

RCP License from District of Columbia DOH Health Regulation and Licensing Administration. (Required)Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider (BLS) (Required)

Functional Accountabilities
Leadership
  • Perform all patient care according to Hospital, Respiratory Care Services Department, and other interdepartmental policy and procedures to all age ranges of patients treated at CNH.
  • Ensure staff therapists provide patient care according to Hospital, Respiratory Care Services Department, and other interdepartmental policy and procedures to all age ranges of patients treated at CNH when in charge of the shift.
  • Attend Management Team Meetings held by RCS Leadership.
  • Operate as a resource person throughout the entire organization, to interface with interdisciplinary team members in all respiratory care services, education, and performance improvement/quality assurance related matters.
  • Will assist with procedures, such as in-house transports or other respiratory procedures as needed.
  • Support department activities required to assure compliance with TJC and DOH regulations.
Staff Support
  • Teach and/or help new or less skilled personnel develop time management skills by evaluating and helping organize their workload.
  • Provide verbal and/or written feedback to staff concerning patient care problems, misdocumentation, or any breech of policy and procedure.
  • Work closely with RCS Clinical Specialists and RCS Clinical Managers to ensure a proper number of trained therapists can work in all areas on all shifts.
  • Organize an ongoing departmental in-service program and coordinate all educational aspects of the department.
  • Respond to ancillary departments requests for respiratory care assistance.
  • Assure timely and coordinated response to all emergent alerts.
Technology
  • Able to instruct staff on basic use of computer.
  • Act as a resource person for staff who need help with electronic medical record, e-mail, entering charges, or working with computers in general.
  • Ensure all required written documentation and all data entry is thorough and complete; include all billing and check sheet completions.
  • Participate in educational opportunities provided by the department and assist the Clinical Specialist with departmental in-services or patient related training when called upon to do so.
Coordinate
  • Ensure optimal staffing levels in all areas of the hospital, even if that means taking an assignment in all care areas of the hospital including primary transport as needed.
  • Act as liaison between therapists and other healthcare team members when needed.
  • Review, revise, and/or develop departmental policy and procedures pertaining to respiratory care services, when needed.
  • Effectively communicate any patient related problem/emergency, family problem, or interdepartmental problem to department director, physician, nursing supervisor, or other departmental manager.
  • Work with RCS Managers in order to schedule employees for CPR, PALS, and NRP classes.
  • Coordinate daily clinical activities of the shift including development and tracking of shift assignment.
  • Develop schedule for frontline therapists, working with the Clinical Manager to assure task is completed according to Union and Hospital guidelines.
Training and Education
  • Assist RCS Clinical Specialists with scheduling employees for CPR certifications, including PALS and NRP.
  • Assist with development of RCS training and in-services, including lectures, skills fairs, and competency checkoffs.
  • Facilitate training sessions for RCS employees and other disciplines as directed by RCS Clinical Specialists.
  • Assist RCS Clinical Managers and Clinical Specialists with maintenance of RCS policies and procedures, including development of new policy and procedure as needed.
  • Serve as super-user for implementation of all new equipment and departmental policy & procedure.
  • Work closely with RCS Clinical Specialists to on-board new hires; including precepting new graduates and travelers.
Logistics
  • Determine shift preceptor for students in clinical rotation in the RCS department.
  • Disseminate essential communications and updates to staff at shift change; assure all staff are provided with a phone.
  • Arrange delivery and pick-up of rental devices used in RCS department.
  • Monitor equipment utilization at UMC ED; scheduling pick-up and delivery of equipment needed for just in time use.
  • Monitor assignments of more than 10 Respiratory Therapists each shift in Acute Care, PICU, NICU, CICU, ED, ECMO RT and Transport Medicine RT.
  • Modify staff assignments throughout the shift as indicated by changes in Respiratory patient census.
