Responsibilities

Our business department is currently welcoming a full time Certified Medical Coder Specialist.

Location: Beautiful Leesburg, Virginia, 40 miles Northwest of Washington DC. Named one of the best places to live by Money magazine. 45-acre campus in a rural area on the northern edge of Leesburg with a gymnasium, beautiful outdoor campus and high ropes course. Excellent public school system.

Compensation package: Competitive salary. Position Summary: This position is responsible for coordinating and maintaining all open and closed medical records.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Assemble and analyzes all discharged records and maintains an organized system for notification of deficiencies.
  2. Responsible for sending reports to referral sources and healthcare providers as identified.
  3. Assigns appropriate medical codes to charts to assure accurate billing.
  4. Assists with data collection and presentation for facility PI activities.
  5. Responsible for release of medical record information from active and discharge files in accordance with all applicable legal, accrediting and regulatory agency requirements.
  6. Files all loose reports into discharged records. Maintains "copy" file and outside information file.
  7. Maintains permanent file and incomplete chart file.
  8. Coordinates the transcription of dictated or written materials for medical record reports.
  9. The Medical Coder Specialist is tasked with auditing all closed charts concurrently to ensure that the medical records documentation meet the requirements of Virginia Department of Behavioral heath and Developmental Services, Virginia Medicaid Services, Tricare and Joint Commission standards.
  10. Ensures that all coding certifications are maintained and up to date.


Qualifications

Qualifications:

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: A combination of mental health experience, auditing and knowledge of Virginia Department of Behavioral heath and Developmental Services, Virginia Medicaid Services, Tricare and Joint Commission standards. The required knowledge, skills, and abilities must be documented and observable in the application form and interview and can be verified by additional references.

      • Must know how to gather and analyze data.
      • Must be detail oriented and possess superior documentation skills.
      • Must be articulate, assertive, and able to communicate effectively (verbally and in writing) with employees and the management team.
      • Must possess a basic understanding of and comfort level with medical terminology, residential treatment, clinical science/pathology and psychiatric disorders.
      • Must also demonstrate initiative, tact and good judgment.
      • Must have basic computer skills.
      • Must have basic transcription and dictation skills.

Physical Demands:

Must be able to:

    1. Lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
    2. Must be able to sit for long periods of time. Must have the ability to move throughout the facility independently.
    3. Must be able to exert physical requirements to lift and maneuver objects, medical records, this includes kneeling, bending, reaching, pulling, crouching, and pushing medical records.
    4. Must have good vision for proofing typed work for errors and information entered into the computer. Must be able to communicate via telephone. Must have the ability to adapt and respond to a variety of activities/situations simultaneously.

Education & Experience: A minimum of a High School graduate with a minimum of two years recent experience in health care or related experience prefer medical records experience. Experience with computerized databases, spreadsheets and word processing is required. Must be a Certified Coder.
