Overview

EEG Tech I

The EEG Technologist I is an entry to mid-level position in the neurodiagnostic unit or department. The EEG Technologist I will perform EEGs procedures according to facility policy and procedures. The EEG Technologist I will maintain patient safety during clinically significant events, and other related duties. Communication skills are essential for this position. During EEG procedures for which competence has not been achieved, the EEG Technologist I trains under direct technical supervision*. Once training is completed and all required institution competencies have been achieved, the EEG Technologist I works under indirect technical supervision*. It is expected that the institution employing the EEG Technologist I makes available the appropriate personnel to provide required direct technical supervision* during training and indirect technical supervision*.Direct technical supervision requires that an EEG Technologist II or a physician who performs all technical aspects required for electroencephalography must be physically present at all times during the procedure. Indirect technical supervision requires that an EEG Technologist II or a physician who performs all technical aspects required for electroencephalography must be immediately available to provide assistance and direction throughout the procedure.

Schedule: This is a nightshift position. Weekend nights 12hr shifts

Responsibilities
    The EEG Technologist I ensures electrode application in adherence with the International 10?20 System; is knowledgeable in correct EEG performance and recognition of clinically significant events and follows facility policy and procedures regarding critical test results*; maintains the patient's safety through communication to other patient care support staff during the EEG if needed; continues to learn and apply basic and intermediate EEG waveform recognition, relevant medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, infection control, current HIPPA practices, contraindications for activation procedures, instrumentation and preparation for use; performs patient assessment as related to care such as electrode fixation product allergies, movement restrictions, and cognitive function; knows and recognizes drug and physiological status effects on activity monitored.
  • The EEG Technologist I communicates appropriately and effectively with the patient and healthcare staff to convey the purpose of the EEG and answers questions regarding the procedure; understands why and how to maintain correct electrode connections; identifies and performs basic and intermediate technical troubleshooting and artifact identification and elimination; understands and follows concepts of digital equipment and electrical safety within the EEG unit; has knowledge of alternate montages, protocols, and alternate equipment settings and their effects should be applied.
  • The EEG Technologist I is familiar with the facility policy and procedures for completion of the technical EEG report, charging procedures, and logging the patient into files; contacts supervisory staff as appropriate for problems within the EEG unit, stocks supplies and prepares patient rooms for EEG procedures; performs any other related duties that are consistent with patient and technical care for this level.
Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Education:

  • Enrollment in or graduation from a Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) accredited Electroneurodiagnostic (END) Program,
  • or an Associate's Degree or higher from an accredited college or university is desired.

Required Experience:

  • An EEG Technologist I must have all of the following in addition to being BLS certified
  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Six months or more experience working in a patient care environment.
  • Entry level PC and Microsoft? Windows* knowledge.

Minimum Physical Requirement:

  • Frequent walking
  • Sitting/standing
  • Reaching including above/below shoulder height
  • Some kneeling/crawling
  • Pulling/pushing >50 pounds
  • Carrying <50 pounds Physical Exposure: Lighting bright and dim, mechanical hazards, hazardous substances, infectious diseases.
  • Must be good or greater: vision, hearing, manual dexterity, talking and speech, typing.
  • Requires the ability to concentrate for long periods of time under stressful conditions and still perform properly and effectively.
