About the Role

This key position is within the HARMAN Automotive Intelligent Cockpit HW/ME engineering group, located in Novi, MI. This position will be responsible for leading the mechanical design, design release, mechanical analysis, and verifications, the development of new mechanical technologies (for digital- cockpit, displays, audio unit, ADAS application) which are cost-effective/reliable, continuous improvement, and lead failure analysis/problem-solving efforts. The successful candidate will have a broad knowledge of mechanical design and technical expertise, and demonstrate the ability to plan, define, and execute the mechanical development for automotive electronic products without supervision.


What You Will Do

  • You will be the key mechanical designer to perform a full lifecycle product development (concept, detail design and release, design verification/validation, support manufacture DFM/DFA, and production industrialization). Ensure the mechanical design delivery on time and in quality through the whole product life cycle.

  • Master uses and hands-on experience with CAD design tools and systems, preferred PTC/Creo, to communicate designs and communicate with internal and external customers.

  • Review the design output (2D, 3D) and documentation for accuracy. Ensure high-quality design and cost-effective solutions.

  • Cross-functional cooperation with other departments (e.g. Hardware, Manufacturing, Procurement, Quality, etc) during the development process in an international environment.

  • Technical communication with suppliers regarding technical topics, especially feasibility studies, DFM, sample quality, and improvement.

  • Provide technical support and guidance for the resolution of project issues, lead the troubleshooting, and seek improvement solutions.

  • Prepare technical reports and presentations per customer requirements, and for Harman management reviews, peers, and direct reports, as necessary.

  • Realize and work out the mechanical-related content for RFI and RFQ-Phases

  • Mentor other engineers with technical expertise.

  • Follow the current mechanical development process and also contribute to process improvement.

  • Contribute to design standard/guideline creation and improvement.

What You Need

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline. A Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering is preferred.

  • 10+ years of mechanical design experience in the field of automotive electronics engineering.

  • Master use and hands-on experience with CAD design tool preferred PTC/Creo.

  • Expertise in mechanical development of automotive electronic products, and multimedia product experience is highly preferred.

  • Consolidated knowledge of plastic injection parts, sheet metal, diecast, related tooling, and 2nd process.

  • Working knowledge of FEA/CAE and DFMEA/ DRBFM techniques.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the automotive OEM product design and development process.

  • Expert level understanding of electronics packaging and ability to mitigate EMC and thermal issues.

  • Thorough understanding of general 3D design and drafting practices. Experience and knowledge in applying geometric dimensioning and tolerancing principles.

  • Demonstrates the ability to transition from theoretical to implementation-based thinking. Strong analytical skills and detail-oriented.

  • Ability to analyze and optimize mechanical designs for cost.

  • Demonstrated self-starter with the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously in a fast-paced global automotive design and manufacturing environment.
