Job Description

SOURCE, the community engagement and service-learning center for the Johns Hopkins University Schools of Public Health, Nursing, and Medicine, is hiring a SOURCE Program Coordinator. The coordinator supports the growth and effectiveness of community involvement initiatives. The coordinator works closely with students and student leaders, and assists them in developing community outreach skills, exploring and understanding social justice issues, accessing community service resources, and making connections to the Baltimore community, particularly as it relates to students' future roles as health professionals.


The Coordinator is expected to model and encourage involvement in the community and effective program planning. All responsibilities require close collaboration with the full SOURCE team, students and student leaders, student government, Student Affairs deans, campus colleagues, and partnering Baltimore community-based organizations.


The Coordinator functions as a counselor/educator; providing programs and services that embrace the values of social justice, citizenship, ethical decision-making, diversity and service to others. Specifically, the duties include counseling, educational program management, event planning, advising, and community partnership coordination.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities


Counseling

  • Provide individual consultation and referrals to students and staff interested in service to the community.
  • Create awareness on campus of different social issues in Baltimore City.
  • Develop reflection and educational resources for students, student groups, and campus colleagues.
  • Facilitate reflection for student and staff volunteers working with community organizations.


Educational Program Management

  • Co-lead Baltimore Action Projects, including community partner project proposals and selection; student recruitment, selection, and training; facilitating reflection; and advising individual scholars.
  • Coordinate the Community Outreach Program at the School of Nursing, including project recruitment, student placements, and monthly reflections.
  • Coordinate the volunteer activities of the Johns Hopkins Health Education and Training (HEAT) Corps.
  • Track and report key data pertaining to student group engagement in educational programs.
  • Supervise 1 Federal Work-Study student program assistant, who supports the implementation of SOURCE educational programs.
  • Liaise with campus colleagues around community engagement programs. Event and Program Planning

  • Conduct community tours, seminars, Days of Service, National Volunteer Week and other events.
  • Organize Hopkins Takes Time for Baltimore service events for staff.
  • Must be present and accountable during key activities and events sponsored, co-sponsored or offered by SOURCE, including occasional evening and weekend events.
  • Advising
  • Serve as a consultant and advisor to community-engaged student groups, encourage and sustain partnerships with student groups, and provide services and support to partnering student groups.
  • Assist students and student groups in planning service-related programs and events.
  • Review and approve new student groups and proposed service activities.
  • Develop, coordinate and train student leaders in leading service opportunities in order to prepare student leaders to become ambassadors for SOURCE.
  • Broaden volunteer recruitment efforts.


Community Partnership Coordination

  • Develop and sustain viable community partnerships with local public health organizations.
  • Assist community partners in structuring their identified needs into engagement opportunities for the health professional schools.
  • Assist in deepening SOURCE's responsiveness to community inquiry, and the level of engagement of local community partners in existing SOURCE programs and service-learning courses.


In Addition

  • The coordinator functions as an integral member of SOURCE's team, assisting the Director in managing the general operations of the center, and responding to the needs of the center through contributing to special projects and other duties as assigned.


Degree of independent action performed on the job

  • Position requires high-level coordination and collaborative skills. Moderate oversight from SOURCE Director.


Internal and external contacts required as part of the job

  • Requires extensive coordination with various offices within the JHU Schools of Medicine, Nursing, and Public Health (MPH Program, Student Affairs, student governments), students, student groups, and with external contacts at local non-profit organizations.

  • Must complete a great number of projects without supervision, but must realize and seek appropriate input, advice and assistance when needed.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite required.
  • Maturity and good judgment, sensitivity to deal tactfully, both in person and virtually, with students, faculty, staff and others who may have concern with the office are essential.
  • Ability to speak knowledgeably of the significance of partnership and the importance of volunteer/service-learner preparation and training.
  • Experience working with Microsoft Office Suite required.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree required.
  • Two years' related experience required.
  • Additional education may be substituted for years of related experience and additional experience may be substituted for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's Degree, with 2 years' experience working with college students/student groups and/or planning and promoting service activities preferred.
  • Prior experience working with college students/student groups and/or planning and promoting service activities preferred.
  • Past volunteer experience preferred.
