Job Description

This position requires a dynamic, creative individual with a strong command of the written word and a deep understanding of strategic communication principles. The ideal candidate will be adept at translating complex military and defense concepts into accessible, engaging content that effectively informs and captivates external audiences, contributing to the positive public perception and understanding of the Navy's mission and values. 
 
Duties and Responsibilities: 
 

  • Develop and write compelling content for external communications, including press releases, feature articles, opinion pieces, and web content that aligns with the Navy's strategic communication goals and public affairs initiatives. 

  • Conduct thorough research and interviews to gather accurate, in-depth information on various subjects related to Navy operations, achievements, and events, ensuring content accuracy and relevance. 

  • Collaborate with the Public Affairs team and subject matter experts to identify story opportunities, key messages, and strategic communication angles that resonate with external audiences and media outlets. 

  • Adapt writing style and tone to fit a variety of platforms and audience demographics, ensuring maximum engagement and message dissemination across different media channels. 

  • Edit and proofread content for clarity, grammatical accuracy, and adherence to Navy style guides and communication standards. 

  • Monitor media coverage and trends to identify opportunities for proactive communication initiatives or to address emerging issues affecting the Navy's public image and relations. 

  • Manage multiple writing assignments simultaneously, prioritizing tasks based on urgency and strategic importance, and ensuring timely completion of all projects. 

 
Education and Experience: 

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in English of Communication 

  • 5 years of experience writing as depicted in portfolio/writing samples. 

  • The ability to write and edit news copy (articles, social media posts, et cetera) according to Navy and Associated Press Style Book. 

  • Strong demonstration of communication skills, both written and oral, including demonstrated ability to produce concise and properly edited products that clearly and logically convey complex information and ideas. 

  • Ability to synthesize complex ideas and initiatives into easily understood communications for a variety of audiences. 

  • Strong demonstration of interpersonal skills and the ability to interact with a variety of audiences and convey information to a variety of audiences with varying levels of understanding of NAVSEA's programs and priorities. 

  • Thorough analytical and critical thinking skills, including the ability to think strategically, to identify needs and requirements, and to develop recommendations and solutions. 

  • Ability to manage small and large-scale projects that contribute to a larger strategic communications plan. 

  • Ability to manage competing priorities under strict deadlines while maintaining a high level of attention to detail; ability to work effectively with NAVSEA's senior leaders in a high profile and demanding office. 

  • Familiarity with NAVSEA, Congress, the Navy and Department of Defense.
