Job Description

The City of Takoma Park is looking for experienced Camp Directors to be responsible for planning, leading, and conducting camp activities for the Recreation Department. There are positions open at both the Recreation Center at 7315 New Hampshire Ave and the Community Center at 7500 Maple Ave. Camp Directors will be responsible for implementing the daily schedule for participants and the day-to-day leadership of all program staff. The typical work hours vary, as the program is open from 6:45 a.m. to 6:15 p.m., Monday through Friday. The dates for camp are June 24 - August 16, 2023 (except July 4) with additional mandatory pre-service training days in mid-June. First resume review will begin March 6, 2024 but the position will remain open until filled. Please note - this position is for seasonal, summer employment only and applicants must be at least 21 years of age.


Typical Duties of the position include:

  • Providing customer service, direct leadership, and general supervision of a summer camp program;
  • Interacting directly with parents, school staff, and Recreation Department staff as required;
  • Maintaining accurate records of attendance, sign-in/out sheets, participant information forms, permission slips, incident reports, program evaluations, and equipment or supplies inventory;
  • Positively enforcing discipline and abiding by the Recreation Department Discipline policy;
  • Providing a clean, safe, and secure environment;
  • Enforcing COVID protocol as directed;
  • Maintaining and operating the proper use of equipment and supplies by participants;
  • Informing parents of programs, activities, and any other vital information;
  • Assisting with set-up and break down of the program;
  • Administering first-aid, as necessary;
  • Monitoring participants and ensuring the rules are followed, and that the participants' behavior is appropriate.
  • Remains energetic and active at all times and is innovative when participants are idle, restless, or unwilling to participate.
  • Notifies the director of unusual situations involving injuries, accidents, or emergencies with participants or staff.

  • General knowledge of youth programs
  • Must be able to work outside in various weather conditions
  • Must have strong customer service skills
  • Able to provide mature leadership, have fun, be flexible, and share enthusiasm
  • Work effectively and communicate with the public, supervisor, and fellow employees
  • Must be able to interact effectively with all age levels, abilities, and cultural backgrounds
  • Must enjoy working with youth
  • Previous experience leading childcare programs/summer camp preferred.


Minimum qualifications include:

  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Must possess or have the ability to possess Standard CPR/First Aid/AED certifications.


The hourly rate for this position is starting at $17.17 and $20.22 per hour, and will be offered at a level consistent with the experience and qualifications of the candidate.
