Job Description

The Building People, LLC, has a position open for a full-time Space Planner to support a state government customer in Virginia. Note: Position may be located in either Northern, VA or Richmond, VA.

Responsibilities

  • Space Planning and Design:
    • Develop space plans, layouts, and designs for offices, workspaces, and common areas.
    • Analyze space requirements and utilization to optimize space efficiency.
    • Ensure compliance with building codes, accessibility standards, and environmental regulations.
    • Coordinate with architects, engineers, and interior designers to develop comprehensive space plans.
  • Space Allocation and Utilization:
    • Allocate and assign space to departments, teams, and individuals.
    • Monitor and assess space utilization to identify opportunities for optimization.
    • Implement space management strategies to maximize space efficiency.
  • Furniture and Equipment Procurement:
    • Coordinate the selection, procurement, and installation of furniture and equipment.
    • Evaluate furniture and equipment options based on functionality, aesthetics, and budget.
    • Ensure compliance with procurement policies and procedures.
  • Move Management:
    • Plan and coordinate office relocations, expansions, and consolidations.
    • Develop move plans, schedules, and budgets.
    • Coordinate with vendors, contractors, and internal teams to execute moves smoothly.
  • Occupancy Planning:
    • Analyze occupancy data to forecast future space needs.
    • Develop occupancy plans and scenarios to accommodate growth or changes.
    • Coordinate space planning efforts with departmental stakeholders and leadership.
  • Technical Support and Documentation:
    • Provide technical support for space planning software and tools.
    • Maintain accurate and up-to-date space planning documentation and records.
    • Ensure data integrity and consistency in space planning databases.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration:
    • Collaborate with departmental stakeholders, including facilities managers, project managers, and end users.
    • Gather input and feedback from stakeholders to inform space planning decisions.
    • Communicate space planning initiatives and changes to stakeholders.
  • Compliance and Standards:
    • Ensure compliance with space planning standards, guidelines, and best practices.
    • Stay updated on industry trends and innovations in space planning and design.
    • Participate in professional development activities to enhance space planning skills.
  • Project Management:
    • Manage space planning projects from initiation to completion.
    • Develop project plans, timelines, and budgets.
    • Coordinate project tasks and resources to meet project objectives.
  • Continuous Improvement:
    • Identify opportunities for process improvement and efficiency gains.
    • Implement best practices in space planning and design.
    • Provide recommendations for space optimization and cost savings.
  • Training and Support:
    • Provide training and support to departmental staff on space planning processes and tools.
    • Offer guidance and expertise on space planning principles and practices.


Required Experience & Skills
  • Experience: At least 3-5 years of experience in space planning, interior design, or related fields is usually required.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Proficiency in space planning software such as AutoCAD, Revit, or similar tools.
    • Knowledge of building codes, accessibility standards, and environmental regulations.
    • Familiarity with furniture and equipment procurement processes and standards.
    • Experience with project management software and tools.
  • Analytical Skills: Ability to analyze space requirements, utilization data, and occupancy trends to inform space planning decisions.
  • Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential for collaborating with stakeholders and presenting space planning proposals.
  • Organizational Skills: Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Attention to Detail: A keen eye for detail is important for creating accurate and precise space plans and layouts.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to identify challenges and develop creative solutions to optimize space utilization and functionality.
  • Teamwork: A collaborative mindset and the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
  • Customer Focus: A customer-centric approach, with a focus on meeting the needs and expectations of internal clients and end users.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Familiarity with federal, state, and local regulations, codes, and standards related to space planning and design.
  • Adaptability: Ability to adapt to changing requirements, priorities, and project scopes.
  • Continuous Learning: A commitment to staying updated on industry trends, best practices, and emerging technologies in space planning and design.

Preferred Experience & Skills

  • Experience in government or public sector space planning may be preferred.
  • certifications such as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) accreditation, NCIDQ (National Council for Interior Design Qualification) certification, or CFM (Certified Facility Manager) designation may be preferred.
  • Experience in project management, including planning, coordinating, and executing space planning projects from concept to completion.

Required Education

  • A bachelor's degree in Architecture, Interior Design, Facilities Management, or a related field is required.
  • A master's degree may be preferred.
