Job Summary

The National Trust for Historic Preservation invites applications for the 2024-2025 Silman Fellow for Preservation Engineering. This 12-month fellowship provides a recent graduate with the opportunity to work on various restoration, rehabilitation, and preservation projects at the Trust's 27 sites nationwide, and to work at TYLin's Silman Structural Solutions practice in-person as a structural engineer.

The Silman Fellow is required to complete a deliverable for the benefit to the field of historic preservation that is suitable for presentation and/or publication. Upon successful completion of the Fellowship, the Fellow will continue as a full-time TYLin employee.

  • Master planning and condition assessments

  • Consultant and contractor team selection

  • Technical research/materials conservation methods

  • Preventive and corrective maintenance

  • Contract document practices

  • Bidding and negotiation practices

  • Job site administrationpractices

  • Distribution of grant funds

Qualifications:

  • B.S. in Civil, Architectural, or Structural Engineering

  • M.S. or M.A. in Historic Preservation or M.S. in Structural or ArchitecturalEngineering with an academic background in historic preservation is required

  • Willingness and ability to travel nationwide

  • Demonstrated professional interest in historic preservation

  • Client focused, always striving to give clients the best solutions

  • Strong commitment to innovation by creating new and better ways to solve clients' toughest challenges

  • High levels of integrity, always doing the right thing in an ethical, fair, and sustainable way

  • Demonstrated experience of collaboration in a diverse and inclusive team, working together toward technical excellence
