The Interior Designer/Furniture Specialist is responsible for leading space assessments, programming, furniture layouts and other key equipment coordination. The Interior Designer/Furniture Specialist will lead small projects and will be assigned to support aspects of larger projects by the Sr. Director of Architecture + Planning as required.

The Interior Designer/Furniture Specialist will work independently on small projects with the responsibility of the development of the design, budgets and construction documents. For larger projects, they will also work with consultants to develop the design and documentation. The position will work closely with the Capital Project Managers in charge of furniture procurement and project schedule as well as collaborate with Project Managers for installment and approve close-out documents.

In addition to projects this position is in charge of the creation and maintenance of Johns Hopkins Health System (JHHS) furniture standards. This includes healthcare (inpatient and outpatient), lab, office/administrative and other support spaces (e.g. food service, lab, etc.). The Interior Designer/Furniture Specialist will round with the Sr. Engineering Project Managers at each JHHS site to review furniture status.

The ideal candidate is proficient in delivering all aspects of projects including project initiation, design, specification, budget, identification of infrastructure items that will require modification, life safety/compliance, and closeout. Beyond the required technical skills for this position, Interior Designer/Furniture Specialist must also possess effective communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills with the ability to build positive working relationships with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.

Other aspects of the position include:

  • Assess existing excess furniture for relocation or discarding
  • Prepare and present designs to the client for approval
  • Develop designs within budget and schedule
  • Collaborate with the Sr. Engineering Project Managers at each JHHS location
  • Collaborate with the Environmental Graphic Design Project Manager
  • Coordinate artwork for projects as required
  • Develop wayfinding concepts and wall graphics as required

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Bachelor's degree in Interior Design or Architecture is preferred but may be waived in accordance with the job experience requirements.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of construction methods and equipment installation/inspection.
  • Foundation and current knowledge of design, construction, operations and maintenance fields and governmental regulations and codes, as applicable to employee's discipline and to an extent that the employee can effectively integrate related construction, operations and maintenance disciplines into a design or interpretation of governmental regulations and codes.
  • Proficient with computer applications (PC- and network-based), including Windows, departmental e-mail, word processing, database, spreadsheet, project management, presentation and CADD packages.
  • High level of ability to solve problems and manage information indicated herein.
  • Ability to use equipment indicated herein.
  • Proficient written and verbal English communication skills, on a college graduate level.
  • Ability to plan, research, analyze, coordinate, implement and present project requirements.
  • Ability to generate clear design direction and convey the same to other designers and design professionals.
  • Interacts professionally with JHM/departmental staff as well as contractor's, manufacturers, vendors and consultants.

Work Experience:

* Bachelor's Degree and 4 years interior design

* Associate's Degree and 8 years interior design

* High School Diploma and 12 years interior design

*plus two (2) years of contemporary experience in the design of healthcare facilities or similar such building projects are desired.

General and design office equipment such as computers, printers, copiers, phones, and presentation equipment and materials.

DIMENSIONS

Cost Management:

Develops design and construction documents based on construction feasibility, estimated cost, code requirements and design program requirements within allotted man-hours and schedule.

Problem Complexity:

  • Distinguishes project requirements from client desires.
  • Obtains field measurements, documents site conditions, etc., as required, to develop project scope and design concepts.
  • Considers and analyzes alternative scopes and concepts.

Autonomy and Responsibility:

  • Provides interior design technical oversight, as requested by the Senior Director, Architecture + Planning.
  • Oversees special individual projects of limited scope at direction of the Senior Director, Architecture + Planning.
  • Collaborates with other designers, planners and/or Project Manager in project scope review and project requirements discussion with clients.
  • Interprets and establishes requirements of work to be done.
  • Coordinates efforts of consultants and/or vendors.
  • Reviews the work of and directs team consultants as required to support team effort.
  • Effectively communicates (written & orally) with supervisor and departmental/JHHS staff.
    • Understands, and assimilates, JHHS and departmental policies, procedures and systems.
  • Responsible for the establishment of furniture, key equipment, and other room standards for Johns Hopkins Health System, departmental design development (design standards and standard specifications), improvement and implementation for furniture and artwork.
  • Specific to the Interior Designer/Furniture Specialist:
    • Leads furniture selection of project team on renovation/reconstruction and new build projects under the direction of the Senior Director Architecture + Planning.
    • Proposes projects or program changes based upon observation and assessment of existing conditions and situations in the facility.
    • Prepares specifications on furniture and equipment, installation and general workmanship on projects.
    • Coordinates post occupancy evaluations.

Senior Director Architecture + Planning

People Management:

  • Provides technical oversight of interior design work performed by lower-level design staff.
  • Relative to increasing degrees of complexity the Interior Designer/Furniture Specialist shall additionally provide supervision of lower-level design staff and further shall ensure that institutional priorities, imperatives and patient care initiatives are addressed and supported by design and implementation strategy.

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Works in a normal office environment where there are limited physical discomforts due to temperature, noise, dust and the like.
  • May spend extended periods of time working at computer station.
  • May spend time in shop and mechanical area environments with exposure to dust, heat, cold, noise and fumes.
  • May work outdoors with exposure to extreme temperatures & other weather conditions.
  • Work may require the ability to stand, walk or sit for extended periods of time.
  • Work may involve possible exposure to communicable diseases, hazardous materials, and pharmacological agents with little likelihood of harm, when established health precautions are followed.
  • Work may require the use of protective safety devices including, but not limited to, safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, infection prevention clothing/apparatus, back belt.
