As a Toll Road General Maintenance Worker, you will perform a variety of tasks that revolve around road maintenance, vegetation control, storm water management, minor asphalt repairs and emergency traffic control activities on the Dulles Toll Road (DTR).

Toll Road General Maintenance Worker

Serves at the Dulles Toll Road (DTR), located in McLean, Virginia.

Operates a variety of landscape maintenance equipment. Participates in seasonal roadside vegetation control, landscaping, snow removal and bridge and roadside maintenance. Inspects roadway conditions and performs emergency pothole repairs or other maintenance repairs on roadways. Performs or assists with emergency traffic control activities. Performs related duties.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Visually inspects and reports unsafe roadway conditions related to construction lane closure activities; ensures lane closures are approved and unapproved lane closures are reported. May respond to and remove roadway debris and hazards.

Performs lane closure and other traffic control activities during maintenance work on road in compliance with the Virginia Work Area Protection Manual.

Operates traffic control devices for establishing work zones on highways and bridges.

Properly implements the use of highway speed attenuator, variable message boards, and proper wording and arrow board placement when effecting changes to traffic patterns.

Participates in daily inspections of the roadway, roadway structures, drainage ditches and culverts, and reports any deficiencies to Operations Supervisor.

Assists law enforcement and emergency services with incident management by providing traffic control in the incident area. Reports incident information to the Control Room and Operations Supervisor.

Participates in seasonal roadside vegetation control, landscaping, and grounds/roadside activities including push mowing, string trimming, weed pulling/control, planting, debris and dead vegetation removal, trash pickup, rut repair, fertilizing, reseeding, and aerating, shoveling, raking, and spreading various gravel products etc.

Operates landscape maintenance equipment to include chain saw, woodchipper, push mower, zero-turn mower, and string trimmers.

Performs pre-inspection of equipment for determining functional operation of the equipment and reports all issues to Operations Supervisor.

Operates powered and hand tools to perform highway, bridge, and roadside maintenance.

Operates street sweeper to clean road shoulder and around plaza attenuators.

Operates dump truck for hauling materials and also during snow operations for snow and ice control.

Operates various mowers to include zero turn and slope mower on grassy slopes up to 40 degrees.

Keeps all noise barriers free from vegetation and tree limbs; area to include both sides of sound wall.

Performs emergency pothole repairs using cold patch and tamper (striking tool).

Maintains culverts, drain inlets and drainage ditches to allow proper water flow and to prevent water from ponding onto road surface.

Assists in facility maintenance and repair activities as needed.

Participates in snow removal activities such as plowing and shoveling and spreading snow melting products at DTR Administration Building and booth locations.

Performs other duties or special assignments as requested by the Toll Road Operations Manager or the Toll Road Manager.

QUALIFICATIONS

Four years of progressively responsible experience in traffic incident management and roadway inspection.

Ability to identify problems with roadways affecting traffic safety and traffic flow.

Ability to apply procedures for responding to accidents and other traffic incidents, snow removal procedures, and road operations.

Ability to apply Federal, state, and other safety guidelines, regulations, and procedures relevant to road operations.

Skill in operating landscape maintenance equipment such as chain saw, woodchipper, push mower, zero-turn mower, and string trimmers.

Ability to work safely and knowledge of the safety rules, regulations, and procedures needed to do so.

Ability to speak and write effectively.

Skill in using a computer and computerized work order and time and attendance systems.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Licensed as a Class B Commercial Driver (CDL).

EDUCATION

A high school diploma or a Certificate of General Educational Development (GED).

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES REQUIRED

A state driver's license in good standing.

Licensed as a Class B Commercial Driver (CDL) [with airbrake endorsement] within 90 days of hire, promotion, or placement in the job.

NECESSARY SPECIAL FACTORS

Work is typically reviewed in progress and upon completion for quantity, quality, timeliness, teamwork, customer service, and other factors.

Work requires moderate to heavy physical exertion (lifting objects up to 50 pounds). May bend, stoop, crouch, and work in a cramped position.

Is subject to hold over and recall on a 24-hour basis for essential services and emergencies such as snow removal.

May be subject to night/weekend work.

May be subject to adverse weather conditions and dust/grease/dirt.

May be subject to potential hazards common to highway and construction environment. Wears personal protective gear, as necessary.

A background security investigation will be required for all new hires.
