Job Description

The Warehouse Manager oversees all staff at the Goodwill recycling center including supervisors, material handlers, forklift operators, and yard jockeys. The Warehouse Manager ensures retail stores are serviced in a timely manner with the requested product. Ensures all appropriate safety regulations are being followed with regards to personal safety and safety of inventory and equipment. The Warehouse Manager is responsible for achieving a monthly revenue goal, while controlling all controllable expenses relative to the warehouse operation. The Warehouse Manager is responsible for making sure all equipment that is necessary to ensure operating success is properly maintained and makes recommendations for when new equipment should be considered.

Hours of Operation: 8AM-4:30PM, Monday-Saturday. Saturdays could be required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides direction to the supervisors that oversee baler operations, dock operations, yard operations, loading and unloading of trailers and clean-outs, store shipments and salvage pick-ups; Plans work schedules and assigns duties to maintain adequate staff for effective warehouse efficiencies while meeting deadlines and controlling overtime; Evaluates employee performance and prepares performance appraisals.
  • Supervises training for new hires on department procedures, policies, equipment usage and safety practices.
  • Conducts facility inspections, documenting findings and presenting recommendations for improvements; Ensures good housekeeping practices, promoting safe working conditions both interior and exterior.
  • Counsels employees in work-related activities, personal growth and career development; Resolves personnel problems, complaints and formal grievances when possible or refers them to the Director of Operations for resolution.
  • Collaborates with workers and the Director of Operations to resolve work-related problems.
  • Completes incident reports submitting in a timely manner; Conducts thorough investigations of all incidents making recommendations for improvements; Ensures adequate and proper usage of personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Forecasts trailer and truck needs for donation sites and stores
  • Opens and closes the building according to company policies and procedures.
  • Completes daily security checks to control company assets.
  • Promotes, ensures and models excellent customer service for both internal and external customers.
  • Ensures proper record keeping and prepares and submits accurate reports in a timely manner; Performs routine maintenance on equipment and determines when and what kind of maintenance is needed.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

  • High School diploma required.
  • Minimum of 3 years supervisory experience in a warehouse or distribution environment required.
  • Forklift certification required.
  • Minimum of 1 year operating a forklift required.
  • Certified or the ability to be certified as a forklift trainer required.

SCOPE OF SUPERVISION:

  • Directly supervises a staff of between 10-15 full-time employees in roles such as Supervisors, Material Handlers, Forklift Drivers and Yard Jockeys.
  • Indirectly supervises employees assigned to work remote donation collection sites, typically a staff of between 6-10 full and part time employees.
  • Employees under supervision may be assigned to multiple or mobile locations.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

Must possess a current valid and unrestricted driver's license and be fully insured according to Maryland law.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Broad knowledge of material handling and warehouse operations
  • Knowledge of Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) regulations
  • Strong interpersonal skills with an understanding of diverse backgrounds and an emphasis on communication, training, team building negotiation skills, interdepartmental interactions, leadership and management.
  • Ability to complete tasks with numerous interruptions.
  • Navigating the Internet to find information, including the ability to open and configure standard browsers, use searches and send and retrieve email; Basic computer skills with the ability to type; Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office products such as Word and Excel
  • Ability to prioritize and complete tasks with little direct supervision.
  • Working knowledge of the warehouse equipment we utilize such as manual and electric hand-jacks, forklifts and bailers.
  • Ability to project and analyze budgets with a focus on operational expense, and revenue.
  • Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
  • Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
  • Selecting and using training/instructional methods and procedures appropriate for the solution when learning or teaching new things.
  • Identifying complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Medium

Lifting up to 50 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds. May be required to regularly stand for extended periods of time, walk, reach with hands/arms with full range of motion, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, push or pull. Regularly required to talk and hear. Frequently required to use hands and fingers to hold, handle and feel objects, knobs, keys and/or buttons.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:

Travel is defined as travel to all areas within Goodwill's territory (Cecil, Harford, Baltimore, Howard, and Anne Arundel Counties, Baltimore City and the entire Eastern Shore of Maryland). In some cases, long-distance travel, including overnights may be required but is typically planned in advance. In some cases, travel may be unplanned.

Must have access to personal vehicle.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

High

Employees are regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts. Employees are frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles and outside weather conditions. Employee is occasionally exposed to high precarious places, risk of electrical shock and/or vibration. The noise level is usually loud.
