Purpose of Position
Reporting to the Associate Director of Residence Life, the Assistant Director is a 12-month live-on position responsible for sharing in the development and management of the residential life program at Northern Kentucky University.

The Assistant Director directly supervises 1-3 live-on, graduate-level, Assistant Residence Life Coordinators (ARLCs) and 1-5 live-on, bachelors-level, Hall Directors (HDs) The Assistant Director is responsible for training, supervising, and evaluating professional staff.

The Assistant Director is responsible for the development and implementation of learning strategies for both professional and para-professional staff members. This position is intended as a mid-level position for professionals within the Housing and Residence Life profession.

This is a contract, annual 12-month live-on position typically funded for up to four years. Appointments will be made on an annual basis based on continued satisfactory performance.
Primary Responsibilities
Staff Supervision & Development

* Directly supervise, guide, and mentor 4-5 full-time professional live-in Residence Hall Directors (RHD), responsible for the management of daily operations, staff supervision, and implementation of an intentional comprehensive engagement plan for their campus living community.

* Indirectly supervise 1-2 ARLC Graduate Assistants and approximately 50 Resident Assistants.

* Build strong and effective working relationships with live-in staff members; establish and maintain ongoing communication and feedback channels with direct reporting staff, including regular meetings and interactions.

* Collaborate with the leadership team, departmental staff, and campus partners to plan and implement intentional and ongoing staff training and development opportunities; assist in the development and reinforcement of individual professional development plans.


Community Development &Engagement

* As part of the Leadership Team, determine priorities for the departmental community and resident engagement framework that supports the intersection of academic, career, and social life for freshmen through senior/grad housing.

* Collaborate with campus partners and UH staff to develop and implement programs and initiatives that promote student success and engage targeted resident resources in specific campus living communities.

* Establish goals and priorities for building inclusive communities; promote and demonstrate the department's Commitment to Inclusive Communities by aiding in the creation of environments that value and respect individuals, and integrate awareness and appreciation of differences.


Care & Conduct

* Meet with students involved in high-level or escalated cases of concern to ensure appropriate follow-up and support.

* Serve as a member of the CCAPE Meeting to identify and respond to students of concern in the campus living communities.

* Support and refer students and staff in need of professional services and resources; be knowledgeable of campus and community resources.

* Consider parents/guardians as partners in the growth and development of residents; within FERPA guidelines, respond promptly to parents/guardians regarding their student concerns and experiences.

* Work closely with the Office of Student Conduct, Rights, and Advocacy to ensure conduct case management, consistency, and follow-through of area student conduct cases and staff adjudication procedures.

* Serve as a hearing officer for student conduct cases that may result in University Housing probation

* Collaborate regularly with the Office of Student Conduct, Rights, and Advocacy, NKU Police Department, Counseling Services, Office of Student Accessibility, and other key University stakeholders.

* Participate in the manager-level on-call rotation with Leadership Team members to share emergency/crisis support and consultative assistance with on-call staff; respond to high-level critical incidents.

Administration

* Support HRL staff in their roles as building managers

* Encourage prompt attention to facilities issues/concerns and proficient use of Adirondack Solutions for operational functions.

* Develop and maintain proficiency to be able to support staff with primary software systems (THD, Maxient, SAP) including facilities/operational procedures such as facility maintenance monitoring, room assignments, room changes, staff transfers, building occupancy, consolidation, accommodations, application processes, etc.

* Communicate major incidents or concerns to the Directors as they arise.

* Advocate for facilities enhancements that promote the holistic development of students; work with staff to determine appropriate needs and improvements.

* Participate in hall opening and hall closing planning processes according to scheduled building usage.

* Manage area budget, including expenditure approvals and oversight of student employment trends.


Leadership and Development

* Support students, staff, and UH in advancing the departmental mission and four foundational value areas.

* Contribute to and participate in strategic planning, department goal setting, data/assessment efforts, and determining community staffing priorities and initiatives.

* Communicate area and departmental trends, concerns, and achievements regularly with the supervisor and leadership team.

* Develop positive working relationships with other campus departments, agencies, and resources that serve students.

* Participate in and/or lead various meetings and development exercises including weekly Residence Life meetings.

* Lead and support HRL staffing and departmental initiatives, exercises, and development opportunities around diversity, inclusion, and intercultural competency.

Qualifications
A Master's Degree is required as well as 4 years of relevant work experience and 4 years of management exp. Must have a valid driver's license. Excellent planning, organizational, presentation, programming, supervision, customer service, and human relations skills are required.

Must be able to effectively communicate in both oral and written contexts. Will need to be creative in managing challenges and change, able to perform under pressure, excel with crisis management, and be able to work with diverse constituents.

Knowledge of Microsoft Office and associated applications, knowledge of assignments and occupancy software, and previous paraprofessional experience in residence life preferred.
