Responsibilities

We have a critical opening for a Senior High Energy Laser Systems Architecture Engineer supporting the MDA Chief Architect's Chief Scientist Team. This team performs evaluations for emerging advanced concepts and provides expert technical advice on critical technical challenges facing the MDA and the Missile Defense System. The Chief Scientist's team makes recommendations to the MDA Chief Architect for new concept demonstrations and potential inclusion in future deliveries of Missile Defense System Elements. The selected candidate will be evaluating and improving the design of a high energy laser defensive weapon system concept. Specific focus will be on system design, modeling and simulation, with emphasis on the physics of beam propagation through the atmosphere. Duties include:

  • Develop Directed Energy Weapon (DEW) System Concepts with supporting subsystems and integration into candidate ground sites, air vehicles, or spacecraft.
  • Perform analyses of atmospheric effects to characterize their effect on DEW weapon-level effectiveness.
  • Develop an assessment of the feasibility of implementing each candidate DEW System Concept in a Directed Weapon System Concept Feasibility Report.
  • Develop design-level analyses of key mechanical components, such as new optical structures and isolated metering structures.
  • Perform preliminary engineering analyses and design to develop concepts, identify, and characterize working examples of the full directed energy beam control train: beam clean-up, wave front sensing, and beam expander, through to the beam exit aperture.
  • Conduct analyses of turbulence effects on optical beam propagation including the effects of local flow fields around ground sites or air vehicles and their contribution to the overall Strehl ratio for representative wind speeds or air speeds and altitudes.

Qualifications

  • A Master's degree in a technical field such as engineering, mathematics, physical sciences, or computer science.
  • At least 12 years of full-time professional experience in a technical field related to missile defense and/or technical analysis of a complex Department of Defense (DoD) weapon system.
  • Works independently, as a team member, or leading teams/tasks, applying engineering rigor to solve engineering/scientific problems.
  • Must be eligible to obtain or have an active SECRET clearance, with the ability to obtain TS/SCI clearance.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and MS Office automation tool proficiency.
  • Must be able to work at our MTSI HQ site in Alexandria, VA with occasional support to the customer site in Fort Belvoir, VA. Partial telework is an option with customer approval.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with the design of beam control systems for HEL weapon systems.
  • Experience performing analytical modeling of beam control system performance and beam propagation through the atmosphere.
  • Experience assessing laser system integration with weapons platforms.
  • Experience with architecture analysis and system performance criterion.
  • Preferred applicants will have experience in one or more of the following areas: Conducting complex analytical studies, developing, or adapting analysis tools to suit needs, building reusable, well-documented MATLAB/Python utilities, assessing advanced concepts and technologies, and evaluating threat intelligence information as it pertains to new technology.
  • Experience with MDA Systems Engineering processes.
