Position Summary:

The nurse extern program is an 8-week immersive program inclusive of optional electives to provide students an opportunity to understand the nursing experience in a hospital. This learning opportunity allows nursing students to gain clinical knowledge and skills in a practice environment. Student Externs will use classroom education in the clinical setting by working alongside experienced nurses and patient care technicians. Externs will practice patient care technician skills including taking vital signs, blood draws, IV insertion, documentation in electronic medical record, and more. Externs will practice time management and learn how to communicate with patients and a health care team. Through this program, externs will build the confidence needed for the transition to a nursing practice role following graduation.

Essential Job Duties:

  1. Assists the registered nurse in the practice of professional nursing by providing direct patient care to promote patient comfort and facilitate the performance of diagnostic and treatment procedures as outlined in the nursing care plan.
  2. Assists the RN with the patient's activities of daily living according to the needs of the patient in a timely manner, following departmental procedure.
  3. Accurately observes, records, and reports to the RN all patient concerns, symptoms, reactions, and progress in a timely manner.
  4. Demonstrates knowledge in basic and intermediate care skills as verified by nurse mentor, clinical preceptor, nurse manager and/or nurse director. Assists the RN with procedures defined by the advanced skills inventory.
  5. Assists the RN with indirect care by maintaining a clean, sanitary, and safe environment to prevent and/or control infections and to provide for safety of patients, visitors, and employees.
  6. Other duties, as assigned.

Required Education:

  • Must be entering final year or final semester of Associate or Baccalaureate RN program of an accredited School of Nursing with a minimum of 2.7 GPA or be in good academic standing

License / Certifications

  • BLS from American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • Maryland Board of Nursing C.N.A. certification

Working Conditions, Equipment, Physical Demands:

Heavy work. Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force
frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

There is reasonable expectation that employees in this position will be exposed to
blood-borne pathogens.
