Job Description

THOR Solutions is actively seeking a highly motivated journeyman-level Mechanical Engineer, with structural experience, to support the United States Coast Guard (USCG) at the USCG HQ in Washington, D.C. The candidate will execute and manage the following technical support tasks for the National Security Cutter (NSC) Program Office:

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Assist the technical lead with the management of the engineering support team.
  • Interface with the SFLC Engineering Services Division and the USCG Project Resident Gulf Coast on items of a technical nature.
  • Conduct a technical review of all internally developed technical cost estimates.
  • Develop technical statements of work for Obligation Execution Team packages (MIPRs, PRs, etc)
  • Document design development activities for modifications to NSC systems.
  • Conduct studies and analyses as assigned by the technical lead for the development of internal CG-9321 TCTOs.
  • Track TCTO's/EC's through the change process.
  • Develop assigned TCTO's/EC's and push them through the change process.
  • Review all externally developed ECPs/ECs/TCTOs for technical sufficiency and report discrepancies to the technical lead prior to the Technical Advisory Group review.
  • Support the NSC CM manager in the planning and execution of the Technical Advisory Group.
  • Conduct ship checks as required for assigned TCTOs.

Location: Full time onsite at the USCG Headquarters in Washington, DC.

Pay: Starting at $90k+ based upon qualifications.

Travel: Approximately 10% travel is anticipated.

US Citizenship Required: Due to the requirements of the federal contract that this position supports, U.S. citizenship is required. Citizenship will be confirmed via I-9/E-Verify at the start of employment.

Secret Security Clearance Eligibility Required: This position requires eligibility for a DoD Secret security clearance. A qualified candidate will either already possess an active or Interim Secret clearance (preferred), or be eligible to obtain a new Secret clearance upon hire.

Typical Physical Requirements: Primarily desk/computer work in an office environment. May involve: repetitive motion. Periodic visits to waterfront/shipboard environments. May involve: traversing shipboard environments (e.g., confined spaces, ladders, hatches) or vision.

Typical Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Bachelor's degree in Marine Engineering, Ocean Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related field from an accredited institution or university.
  • At least three (3) and ideally seven (7) years of demonstrated experience with Government vessel design, construction, and repair with primary focus on hull structures and mechanical systems.
  • Experience performing structural analysis including Finite Element Analysis (FEA), fatigue life analysis in order to evaluate planned engineering changes in support of major shipbuilding acquisition and repair projects.
  • At least one (1) year of demonstrated experience with U.S. shipbuilding acquisitions.
  • At least one (1) year of demonstrated experience supporting a U.S. major system acquisition program (DHS/USCG Level I, DoD ACAT I or equivalent).
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office programs, including expertise with MS Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Familiarity with SharePoint and MS Teams.
  • Excellent communication skills.
