The Swim Lesson Instructor is responsible for providing youth Red Cross swimming instruction in swimming techniques, skills, and water safety to participants while maintaining a balanced, safe and supervised program. Individual must be able to assess the needs and skill level of each program participant. Individual should be a team player with the commitment to be flexible and accommodating to the hours needed for instruction.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Report directly to immediate supervisor, the Swim Instruction Coordinator.
  • Maintain a professional, courteous, and compassionate relationship with all participants and parents.
  • Complete all paperwork required by the Red Cross within the allotted time following each session.
  • Ability to provide all levels of swimming instruction.
  • Responsible for all equipment and supplies belonging to the City and keep storage area, etc. neat and secure.
  • Maintain open communications with all staff, participants and parents of the program.
  • Work cooperatively with all team members and parents involved in program.
  • Assist the coordinator in completing and distributing evaluation forms for program participants.
  • Ensure a safe environment for all participants and staff.
  • Work all assigned hours as designated by supervisor.
  • Perform any other job duties as directed by supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Must have strong customer service skills
  • Must be able to work well with others
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
  • 16 years of age or older (work permit required for those under the age of 18)
  • Previous experience as Water Safety Instructor and/or Water Safety Aide
  • Knowledge of Red Cross Swimming Program
REQUIRED CERTIFICATES AND/OR LICENSES:
  • Current certification in accredited swim instruction program
  • CPR and First Aid
SKILLS (Communication/Language; Mathematical; Computer; etc.)
  • Ability to read and interpret documents using the English Language
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills and an ability to interact with children of varying ages.
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Basic Mathematical skills

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is constantly exposed to water. The employee is constantly required to remain in the water; to reach items at various depths within the pool, and to constantly position self to maintain access to swimming participants. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pound items. Must be able to observe participants' swimming skills and abilities and adjust instruction techniques. Employee must be able to work demanding hours in season.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is constantly exposed to outside weather conditions, to include temperatures as high as 110 degrees.
