The Director, Evaluation leads a high-performing team to drive the utilization and execution of evaluations across AARP Foundation. Directs the evaluation of existing programs and those in various stages of development to identify improvements and measure outputs and outcomes. Directs the collection and analysis of data to develop insights for decision-making, setting organization priorities, and informing strategy. Collaborates with senior management to develop strategies that will position the organization for success.


Responsibilities

  • Creates and updates the evaluation portfolio and framework to support the execution of the strategic plan, program innovation and optimization, and evidence-based grant making. Manages and identifies opportunities for growing the capacity of the Evaluation unit to maximizing the quality of evaluations.
  • Directs the development of evaluation plans that address logic models, strategic and program evaluation questions, measurement of outputs, outcomes and impact, and data collection, analysis, and reporting methods. Ensures the usefulness of evaluations for intended users.
  • Manages the analysis and interpretation of evaluation findings, generating actionable insights for internal and external stakeholders. Reports and disseminates the results of evaluations in various accessible formats, including the use of data visualization and dashboards.
  • Works with cross-functional teams (including Technology, Research, and Program) to clearly articulate requirements for data collection, storage, extraction, and utilization, and ensures data quality and rigor in data analysis.
  • Leads collaboration with the Program Investment unit on economic evaluation of Foundation programs, such as cost effectiveness and benefit-cost analysis.
  • Engages with external organizations and experts, staying abreast of developments in the space of evaluation. Focuses particularly on best practices and novel technologies and methods related to impact measurement, evaluation, and reporting.
  • Advises and assists internal stakeholders on how to measure and increase the impact of the work.
  • Manages external evaluation consultants and data partner relationships to support the design and execution of rigorous evaluations as needed.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years of experience in program evaluation, and performance measurement in the philanthropic, nonprofit, or private sector.
  • 2+ years of management experience; demonstrated experience motivating, managing, and inspiring a high-performing team.
  • Mastery of qualitative and quantitative evaluation methods. Quantitative analysis skills including familiarity with cost-effectiveness and benefit-cost analysis or social-return-on-investment analysis and modeling.
  • Demonstrated ability to create and implement new learning and evaluations methods of practice.
  • Excellent written, analytical and oral communication skills including the ability to collect, review, synthesize and present information and findings.
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams across the enterprise. Strong project management skills with proven ability to coordinate various groups and to manage multiple projects.
  • Bachelor's degree in related field; Master's degree in related field preferred.
  • Experience developing and tracking social impact metrics preferred.

Flexible Work Arrangement (FWA)

AARP observes Mondays and Fridays as telecommuting workdays, except for essential functions. Remote work and telecommuting can only be done within the United States and its territories.
