Job Description

We are seeking a Grounds Keeper who will maintains the grounds on campus including planting and maintaining trees, turf, shrubs, and flowers. Cleans sidewalks and roads on campus. Clear snow and ice from walkways and parking lots.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Picks up trash on a daily basis.
  • Mows, trims, and edges lawn during the growing season.
  • Plants and transplants trees, shrubs, and flowers on campus. Mulches and weeds.
  • Prunes and trims plants under supervision to keep them healthy, to generate growth, and
  • to maintain their attractive shape and appearance. Cuts down or pulls out trees and shrubs as
  • needed.
  • Rakes and mulches leaves.
  • Cleans roads on campus using shovel, broom, blower, and powered street cleaner.
  • Clears snow and ice from walkways, parking lots, steps, and any other area(s) which may be
  • required.
  • Observes all safety precautions and uses equipment and chemical treatments (i.e., ice melts)
  • properly to avoid harming self and others, and damaging property.
  • Maintains equipment and work area in clean and orderly condition.
  • May be required to be available for 24 hour calls.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications
  • High school Degree or equivalent preferred.
  • One year of work experience as a groundskeeper.
  • Appropriate valid driver's license with a good driving record preferred. Ability to drive a light truck preferred.
  • Ability to operate equipment such as mowers, trimmers, blowers, small tractors and others used in grounds keeping work.
  • Knowledge of proper planting procedures.
  • Ability to work outdoors.
  • Ability to lift, carry or otherwise move and position objects and materials weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • On an infrequent basis, may need to lift up to 80 lbs.
  • Ability to stand, walk or otherwise move about campus on a continuous basis.
  • Ability to ascend/descend ladders periodically to perform landscape maintenance.
  • Ability to work overtime when necessary.
  • Ability to interact and/or work with faculty, students, staff: and visitors in a respectful and courteous manner.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to read and write to maintain records and work schedules and to read work orders.


*This is an essential staff position*


Position becomes fulltime union member upon successful completion of 90-day probationary period.



Preferred Qualifications
  • Three years of related experience preferred.


**This is a Bargaining Unit position. All newly hired employees in Bargaining Unit positions shall be considered probationary employees until completion of 90 calendar days of employment. These employees shall become members of the Bargaining Unit if this employment continues beyond four months. The university will notify the employees union. Bargaining Unit employees shall become eligible for benefits upon completion of their probationary period.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis.
