Job Description

Position Objective:

In conjunction with the department leadership, this position supervises the operations of the designated laboratory area including adherence to technical, regulatory, and quality components. Ensures that all work is organized and handled in accordance with departmental protocols and serves as a resource to staff.

Essential Job Duties:

  1. Provided leadership and mentorship to laboratory staff, fostering a positive and collaborative work environment. Schedule and assign tasks to ensure optimal staffing levels and efficient workflow. Participate in performance evaluations and provide feedback to team members. Coordinate recruitment, training and onboarding of new staff.
  2. Oversee quality control measures to maintain the accuracy and precision of lab tests. Ensure compliance with all relevant regulatory agencies, as applicable (CAP, AABB, CLIA, etc.). Participates in audits and inspections, addressing any deficiencies promptly. Develop and update standard operating procedures (SOPs) as needed.
  3. Maintain and troubleshoot laboratory instruments and equipment. Coordinate equipment maintenance schedules and ensure adherence. Identify need for equipment upgrades or replacements and participate in the selection process.
  4. Monitor and manage laboratory supplies, reagents, and consumables. Place orders, receive deliveries, and maintain adequate stock levels. Minimize waste and control costs related to inventory management.
  5. Ensure compliance with safety protocols and regulations. Conduct safety training for lab personnel and maintain a safe working environment. Respond to and investigate any incidents or accidents.
  6. Perform tests that require complex network of steps and variables, independent judgement and interpretation while working the bench in the assigned area of the department. Oversee the accurate recording and reporting of test results.
  7. Identify opportunities for process improvement and implement best practices. Participate in quality improvement initiatives and projects. Serve as a technical resource.
  8. Maintains the management of multiple projects and ensures goals and timelines are met.
  9. Anticipates and prevents problems independently by taking corrective actions before crises occur. Takes appropriate steps to resolve. Recognizes non-standard situations, notifies supervisor, if applicable, and documents all corrective actions taken when test systems or processes deviate from the laboratory's established protocols.
  10. Participates in the annual operating and capital budget cycles. Develops strategies to support financial stewardship and meet financial targets.

Educational/Experience Requirements:

Required Minimum Education:

Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with course work sufficient to meet the requirements of the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) for Board of Certification as a technician, technologist/scientist, or specialist (excluding DPT, MLA, PBT).

Required Minimum Experience:

  • Two years of experience working in an acute care facility in a similar role, preferred.

Required License/Certifications:

  • MLS(ASCP), MT(ASCP), HTL(ASCP) categorical or specialist (ASCP), MT(HEW), or MT(AMT); preferred OR
  • MLT(ASCP) or HT(ASCP) with seven years working in a similar role

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Ability to work cooperatively with all types of personalities both inside and outside the organization.
