Overview

The Pediatric Occupational Therapy Fellow evaluates the developmental and functional status of pediatric patients, administers treatment, fabricates or recommends adaptive equipment and splints, documents evaluation results and patient progress, and provides patient and family education. Provides age-appropriate care and services to patients from the age of birth to 18 years. Participates in mentored practice, didactic learning, and professional development activities as part of the 12-month Fellowship Program.

The Nationwide Children's Hospital Occupational Therapy Mental Health Fellowship is a one-year program that begins in July/August. This post-professional program is designed to develop the fellow as an advanced practitioner in the field of pediatric mental health occupational therapy across inpatient, outpatient, and partial hospitalization settings. Through the experience, the fellow will be provided with an advanced level of clinical training, experience in evidence-based practice and clinical research, opportunities to operate within multidisciplinary clinics and treatment teams throughout various tiers of mental health service, and leadership opportunities with internal partners and external community partners in the realm of child and adolescent mental health. In addition, the fellow will participate in scholarly activities, leadership training, didactic courses, and a mentored assistant teaching opportunity through The Ohio State University's Occupational Therapy Doctoral program.

At the time of application, fellowship applicants must be either a) a graduate of an accredited occupational therapy program with a current Ohio OT license, or b) currently enrolled in an accredited occupational therapy program with the plan to graduate and obtain Ohio licensure prior to the start of the fellowship program. Applicants must either have a) prior work experience as a pediatric and/or mental health occupational therapist or b) a Level II occupational therapy fieldwork in the areas of pediatrics and/or mental health. Three professional letters of reference must be submitted at the time of application. Please also include a one-page personal statement indicating your interest in this fellowship program as well as how it aligns with your future professional goals. Responsibilities

* Evaluates patients to determine developmental or functional status using standardized measures or clinical observations. Identifies patient's strengths and deficits, establishes goals, and develops an individualized treatment plan incorporating patient and family needs.
* Administers therapeutic treatment to patients with developmental delay or functional deficits, providing optimal development, function, and independence. Utilizes developmental activities and other treatment techniques to meet specific needs and achieve therapy goals, observes progress or changes and modifies treatment plan accordingly.
* Fabricates, recommends, or provides adaptive equipment, splints, or casts to maintain functional body joint positions, restrict muscle contractures, prevent deformities, and improve function or mobility.
* Educates on goals and therapy plans, instructs on at home activities, and evaluates ongoing compliance and understanding. Documents evaluation results, objective status, progress towards goals, treatment plans, and recommendations.
* Communicates and collaborates with families, physicians, third-party payors, and relevant healthcare providers. Maintains administrative functions of individual caseload, including scheduling, entering daily charges, and submitting timely documentation. Places referrals to ensure continuity of care.
* Attends continuing education programs and participates in departmental in-service training. Conducts Occupational Therapy educational programs for hospital staff, students, and community. Delegates to students from accredited programs, certified occupational therapist assistants (COTA), and unlicensed personnel, supervising care provided.
* Attends all required lectures and completes assignments as necessary in didactic courses. Participates in scholarly and professional development activities.

Qualifications

Education Requirement:
* Graduate of an accredited occupational therapy program with a current Ohio OT license or currently enrolled in an accredited occupational therapy program with the plan to graduate and obtain Ohio licensure prior to the start of the residency program.
* Adheres to designated productivity standards for residents. Completes at least 340 hours of mentored practice with Residency Clinical Mentors.

Licensure Requirement: Applicable license per education.

Experience: Experience as an occupational therapist or a Level II occupational therapy fieldwork in a related setting required.
