Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the Executive Vice President & Chief Academic Officer, Chair of Pediatrics serves as a leader with an oversight of all academic activities including the two principle components: strategic leadership in research and education for Children's National Research Institute (CNRI); and academic and administrative leadership of the Department of Pediatrics at Children's National Hospital (CNH).

The CAO will provide strategic vision and oversight of the entire academic mission of CNH and work in harmony with senior leadership to provide direction and management of the Children's Research Innovation Campus (CNRIC). The position will effectively lead, develop and support the Department's faculty members in carrying out their responsibilities, and be instrumental in growing the Department's clinical, academic and research scope.

Qualifications

Minimum Education
Medical Doctor (M.D.) Board Certified in Pediatrics with advanced training in Medical Education (Required)


Minimum Work Experience
10 years of progressive leadership experience in academic health systems with a track record of leadership and peer-reviewed scholarship in medical education. (Required)

Functional Accountabilities
Responsible Conduct of Research

Oversight of professional educational and clinical enterprise

  • Oversees all aspects of the research mission to foster growth, the creation of new knowledge, and to preserve and enhance the level of funding throughout the institution. This includes the oversight of team member/faculty/community member educational development/academic affialiations and relationships.
  • Supports growth of clinical trials, translational research, simulation, innovative educational research, publications, and extramural grant funding
  • Ensures effective and compliant research operations: SPF, IRB, Grants management office, comparative medicine and clinical trials office
  • Ensures high quality performance and regulatory body compliance across all programs
  • Research budget and financial performance
  • Consistently demonstrates adherence to the standards for the responsible conduct of research.

Lead the Department of Pediatrics and oversight of CNH Graduate Medical Education (GME)

  • Oversees and manages academic affiliations and relationships including faculty development: appointments, promotions, educational activities
  • Development of new and or/expanded training programs that aligns with CNH strategic goals
  • Ensures high quality performance and regulatory body compliance across all programs
  • Assures compliance with ACGME, ACCME and any additional relevant regulatory requirements, and development of key educational partnerships outside CNH.
  • Oversees and fosters growth of philanthropy and funding of educational and scientific research to help create a financially sustainable academic mission.

Organizational Engagement

  • Ensures senior CNRI and CNH leadership, CNH Board, and other key stakeholders and influencers are informed re: achievements, opportunities, and challenges involving the CNRI Academic enterprise
  • Attends Leadership Council and all organizational meetings and activities expected of EVP-level leader
  • Demonstrate mentorship in research, which is a collaborative effort, with Research Center Directors and Research Institute Leaders
  • Visible presence and participation at all expected CNRI campus events

  • Lead efforts to promote diversity and inclusion across academic enterprise, including overseeing targeted efforts to diversify Children's National faculty, and support programs and initiatives that advance the organizations diversity goals.
