Job Description
Responsible for the prompt, efficient, and accurate performance, validation, and reporting of laboratory test results, which are utilized for the purpose of prognosis, diagnosis, treatment, and research. Responsible for the technical aspects of tests performed within a specified section of the laboratory including quality control and equipment maintenance. May be responsible for coordination shift workflow to ensure continuity in operations and completion of routine and specialized tasks. Also responsible for research and development of new procedures to be performed within the section. Under the direct supervision of a TN licensed Director, Manager, or Supervisor, the MT III is responsible for the assigned shift as scheduled. The MT III may work under the guidance of other qualified clinical laboratory personnel. The MT III helps ensure accountability for all proper testing procedures within assigned laboratory. Can take a lead role in verification and validation planning for new equipment and assays . Responsible for all duties of the Medical Technologist I and II. Employee must meet the qualifications as defined in CLIA requirements 42 CFR Part 493 for one or more of the following roles based on education, experience and responsibilities, performed by specific incumbent, within the job: Technical Consultant, Technical Supervisor, General Supervisor and/or Testing personnel. Department will designate and maintain records for individual specific qualifications.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Accurately performs and interprets all laboratory tests (routine and specialized) in an assigned area of the laboratory. Resolves advanced-level problems with equipment and test systems. Ensures compliance with test system processes and monitors the accuracy of testing procedures and tests performed. Promotes patient safety and reports any issues promptly to laboratory leadership.
  • Performs and may take a lead role in QC programs. Assists in Quality Program initiatives. Performs advanced QC review and analysis independently. Recommends and documents the appropriate corrective action when deviations occur. Coaches others on QC review and corrective action process and assists leaders in designing and implementing QC procedures. Promotes quality and compliance with all standards/requirements of hospital and licensing/accrediting agencies. Independently analyzes and monitors quality data for continual improvement opportunities. Participates in continual improvement activities.
  • Troubleshoots and performs preventive maintenance procedures as assigned. Acts independently and resolves problems within the section, notifying section leadership as appropriate. Ensures that preventive maintenance procedures are current and are function checks are performed on all equipment as required. Performs troubleshooting in situations and for preventative maintenance problems--identifies problems, recommends corrective action, implements the recommended action and documents action taken.
  • Writes/conducts orientation, training, competency assessment and procedures: Assists section leadership in the orientation and training of new personnel and students. Acts as a resource to all new personnel, students, trainees, and residents. Maintains training documentation. Assists leadership with competency assessments. Assist with procedure manual maintenance and writes updates to procedures as needed.
  • Participates in verification and validation of new equipment and test systems. Researches, develops, evaluates and assists with implementing equipment and test systems. Develops verification and validation plans for equipment and test systems. Evaluates verification and validation data and takes the appropriate corrective action with guidance from lab leadership.
  • Assists in scheduling of workflow to ensure adequate coverage in the lab at all times. May coordinate shift workflow with preceding and following shifts to ensure continuity in operations and the completion of routine and specialized tasks. Analyzes workflows and suggests opportunities to eliminate non-value added waste. Recognizes and assists in adjustment of assignments to improve current workflow.
  • Inventories, receives and stores supplies as required. Inventories reagents and supplies in a manner to ensure continuity of laboratory operations. Orders supplies as required. Appropriately receives and stores reagents and supplies for designated section.
  • Creates and promotes a positive work climate and the overall team effort of the sections
  • Participates in continuing education requirements as required.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned in order to meet the goals and objectives of the department and institution
  • Maintains regular and predictable attendance.

Minimum Education and/or Training:

  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or in one of the biological, chemical or physical sciences and completion of an approved training program. Educational requirements may be waived for applicants who meet criteria outlined in TN Rule 1200-06-01-.22.

Minimum Experience:

  • Four (4) years of Medical Technologist experience required, of which two (2) years of experience must be in assisting with and/or performing method validation, quality control evaluation, writing procedures, troubleshooting analyzers and procedures and performance improvement
  • Two (2) years of relevant clinical medical laboratory technician experience may be considered for one (1) year of medical technologist experience
  • Experience in molecular biology and sequencing techniques is strongly preferred

  • Position is assigned to the Molecular Microbiology

Licensure, Registration and/or Certification Required by SJCRH Only:

  • Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist, MLS (ASCP or AMT) required within six (6) months of hire if not licensed.
  • Tennessee licensure as Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Special Analyst or Categorical in assigned laboratory section preferred.
  • Certification in assigned discipline as a Categorical Specialist by ASCP preferred.

Compensation

In recognition of certain U.S. state and municipal pay transparency laws, St. Jude is including a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This is an estimate offered in good faith and a specific salary offer takes into account factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the salary range and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current salary range is $31.50 - $55.00 per hour for the role of Medical Technologist III- Molecular Microbiology.
