Job Description

We are seeking a COOptical Supervisorwho will oversee opticians working for the Wilmer Eye Institute optical stores in Bethesda and Frederick.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist with recruitment of new optical staff.
  • Complete on-boarding and training both new and current employees.
  • Assist in employees' merit reviews.
  • Resolve patient complaints.
  • Ensure that compliance with standard operating procedures of Wilmer Eye Institute is followed.
  • Authorize and schedule time off for vacations of the optical staff.
  • Process budget transfers for JH International Department and other participating foundations.
  • Meet with staff and department heads to make sure the proceeds are being processed properly.
  • Meet with new physicians to share information on optical services and products for the benefit of their patients.
  • Manage optical inventory, open balances, and returns.
  • Fit all types of eyewear including progressive multi-focal lenses.
  • Know how to adjust and repair frames.
  • Teach I&Rs of contact lenses to patients as needed.
  • Intercede with contracted labs as needed.
  • Prepare and submit all daily sales reports and deposits to Wilmer Finance in a timely fashion.
  • Process all invoices for payment through Wilmer Finance.


Minimum Qualifications
  • High school/ GED.
  • Five years optical/ retail experience.
  • ABO certification is required after two years of service. Must maintain certification throughout duration of employment.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Strong knowledge of retail sales practices.
  • Professional demeanor and proven high level customer service.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis.
