Job Description

Our pediatric cardiology division has been expanding over the past few years and our cardiology and heart surgery program ranks in the top 25 in the country. Our inpatient cardiac unit is located within the Bloomberg Childrens Center at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland and serves as a cardiac intensive care step-down unit and acute care floor for pediatric patients diagnosed with heart disease.


The Pediatric Acute Cardiac Unit is seeking a Nurse Practitioner (NP) to join our cardiology division. The Nurse Practitioner will work collaboratively as a member of a team that provides comprehensive care to pediatric patients with a primary focus on inpatient cardiology care. The NP will work under the supervision of an attending cardiologist and will work collaboratively with Childrens Center fellows, residents, nurses, pharmacists, dieticians and therapists. The NP is responsible for conducting comprehensive and/or episodic health assessments. Records and documents assessment necessary to maintain, coordinate, and/or expedite required services. Including: obtaining history and conducting physical exams, discriminating between normal and abnormal findings; and identify differential diagnosis.


Working with a strong focus on quality and patient satisfaction, the NP will establish and implement a Plan of Care including: ordering appropriate lab, radiographic and other studies; appropriately interpreting results of lab, radiographic and other studies; performing tests and procedures as indicated within scope of practice; establishing a plan of care related to patients identified problems (medication and therapeutic procedures); consult with other team members regarding proposed treatment guidelines as necessary.


The NP will be expected to aide in coordination of care for patients transitioning from hospital to home.


The NP will be asked to identify areas of weakness in operational systems and makes recommendations for improvements; communicate significant information in an organized, logical, and concise manner to colleagues; provide constructive feedback as it relates to performance in an appropriate manner; and adhere to the confidentiality policy as outlined in the interdisciplinary Clinical Practice Manual.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Participating in daily morning rounds in the PCICU with the inpatient cardiac team.
  • Participating in daily rounds with the inpatient pediatric cardiology attending/team.
  • Writing transfer orders from the PCICU to the PCU, daily notes, procedure notes and other documentation.
  • Writing orders, ordering appropriate labs, tests, and consult requests for pediatric cardiac patients.
  • Coordinating consultations with other teams including SLP/speech therapy, GPS, GI/nutrition, Genetics, Pain Service and other services as needed.
  • Writing home care orders, comprehensive discharge summaries, and scheduling follow up appointments.
  • Completing pharmacy prior authorization forms for specialty medications.
  • Attend cardiac surgery management conference.
  • Participate in nursing education and quality improvement activities.
  • Other relevant duties as required.


Work Schedule

  • 40 hours per week
  • Every 3rd weekends.


Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications

  • Current CPR and PALS certification and completion of the JHH credentialing process is required prior to start.
  • Current licensure as a NP in the state of Maryland. Achieve and maintain national certification by an accredited NP certification body (PNCB).


Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in nursing, Registered Nurse license and Certified as a Nurse Practitioner. Must be licensed as NP in State of Maryland or other state where practicing.
  • Additional experience may substitute for master's degree, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Pediatric Acute Cardiac Care experience.
  • Three to Five years Pediatric NP experience.
  • Will consider new PNP with previous bedside cardiac care experience.

Physical Requirements:

Sitting, standing and walking for extended period. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s). Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or clinical environment.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis.
