Job Summary

Involved in ensuring optimal patient outcomes through effective leadership and / or provision of patient care delivery in assigned nursing unit(s) or area(s). Promotes environment for a shared voice in nursing practice and exchange of ideas to continually improve nursing and patient care outcomes. Accountable for the quality, safety, and cost-effectiveness of patient care. Consults and collaborates with other health care professionals to coordinate the management of patient care. Serves as a resource to staff, physicians, students and others.

Supervises staff involved in providing clinical patient care. Assists in ensuring the quality of patient care delivery in a specific patient care area and serves as a role model for professional nursing practice. Assists with the administration and management of personnel, fiscal, and material resources. May assume full responsibility for the unit in delegated areas and in the absence of the manager.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

Department Description

15 Moffitt is a 24 beds acuity adaptable Neuro Specialty Unit. We care for 100% Neurosurgery, Neurovascular and Neurology patient population which includes pre/post op, ICU transfers, transfer center and direct admits. There is Centralized Cardiac Telemetry and Centralized Continuous Pulse Oximetry capability. Patients may require cardiac and respiratory monitoring, more frequent assessments, and specialized treatments requiring more intensive nursing care than an acute care unit.
* Neurovascular/ Neurological: CVAs/strokes, seizure disorders, altered mental status, encephalitis, neuromuscular disorders, TIAs, and intractable migraines.
* Neurosurgical: Craniotomies for tumors, acoustic neuromas, aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, deep brain stimulators, trigeminal neuralgia, and seizure disorders. Transsphenoidal surgeries for pituitary tumors, and stereotactic biopsies. VP (ventriculo- peritoneal) shunts and lumbar drain placements; and select EVDs.
* Neuro-Interventional: Cerebral angiograms and embolizations.
An interdisciplinary team of nurses, physicians, therapists, and Case Managers work together to care for, to rehabilitate to improve outcomes for an optimal discharge to home or other health care settings.

Required Qualifications

  • Recent (within the past 3 years) inpatient clinical RN at a Transitional or Critical Care level of care
  • Recent administrative oversight in an inpatient setting (within the past year)e.g. previous experience as an Assistant Nurse Mangager, charge nurse or similar role.
  • Demonstrated skills to effectively supervise clinicians and to manage the complex workflow and multiple priorities involved with a patient care unit.
  • In depth knowledge of patient care clinical standards and care delivery, systems, external regulations and internal policies.
  • Strong knowledge of human resources management policies, with the ability to train, monitor, evaluate, and document human resources matters and employee performance. Provides input to decision-makers on human resources matters.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to quickly analyze problems, determine appropriate level of intervention, and develop and apply effective solutions.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for effective information exchange and problem solving with all levels of management and staff, consultants and outside agencies.
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills, with the ability to train and mentor subordinates, to convey complex clinical and technical information in a clear and concise manner. Prepares and presents a variety of reports, documentation, analyses, and project proposals.
  • Knowledge of business software and specialized applications and data management systems used in nursing units or departments.
  • Schedule flexibility to provide unit accommodation as well as orient and work at all UCSF locations
  • Willingness to flex your schedule to work outside of standard business hours to support night shift staff for example 1400-2200 or 1800-0200 etc.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Involvement in unit and/or hospital committees
  • Clinical Nurse III competency level
  • Master's Degree preferred.
  • ACLS
  • Certification in a specialty (CNRN, SCRN, or PCCN)

License/Certification

  • Active Registered Nurse licensure in the State of California
  • Active American Heart Association CPR Certification
  • NIHSS
