Description

The Phlebotomist collects and processes blood specimens for testing in the laboratory. Incumbents maintain current knowledge and skills to independently perform dermal punctures on all age groups.

  • Collects blood specimens using age-appropriate techniques. Accurately aliquots, labels and stores specimens.
  • Evaluates specimens for acceptability prior to receipt and follows specimen rejections criteria. Communicates appropriately with ordering source and completes documentation.
  • Exhibits a working knowledge of lab specimen requirements as evidenced by adequate sample collection, post-collection handling, and distribution to proper lab section with minimal recollections.
  • Demonstrates working knowledge of lab computer/clerical systems: order entry, registrations, specimen receipt, printing labels, printing/retrieving/ faxing reports, and entering revisits.

Qualifications

Minimum Education
High school diploma or equivalent X Preferred

Minimum Education
Other _Phlebotomy Training Program__ X Preferred

Required Skills
Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.

Required Skills
Phlebotomy Technician or Equivalent Certification Preferred

Minimum Work Experience
Required: 6 months full time equivalent phlebotomy experience or clinical internship including minimum of 100 venipunctures.
Preferred: Previous hospital phlebotomy experience
