Job Description

Broad Institute at the is looking for highly motivated research associates to develop and apply state-of-the art proteomics technology to address compelling questions in biology, chemistry and clinical medicine. The specific research areas of immediate interest that this scientist could drive include:

  • Detailed studies of cellular signaling networks related to protein phosphorylation, ubiquitylation or acetylation
  • Unveiling the targets of drugs or identifying protein interactors through chemical proteomics technologies and affinity purification MS
  • Developing biological understanding of response and resistance to therapy
  • Proteogenomic studies of a wide range of cancers
  • Developing and optimizing new, broadly enabling proteomic technologies including targeted, quantitative MS assay development for proteins and modifications of high biological or clinical interest.

Successful candidates will work in many of these areas together with an interdisciplinary team of clinicians, biologists, computational and proteomics scientists to deeply characterize and understand the proteomes of tumor-derived material, cells and biofluids.

Candidates must have:

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or Biochemistry and 6+ years of experience in a research laboratory, or a Master's degree in analytical chemistry or biochemistry and 4+ years of experience.
  • 3+ years of experience in MS-based proteomics; significant experience with MS, HPLC, peptide and protein separation.
  • High productivity, evidenced by high-quality collaborative science and research publications in peer reviewed journals on which they are named co-authors.
  • Able to work in a team.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Hands on skills and knowledge in one or more of the following areas will be considered an advantage:

  • Knowledge of various scientific databases and experience with publishing and presenting experimental results highly desirable.
  • Experience in statistical and/or computational analysis of proteomics data.
  • Posttranslational modification analysis such as phosphorylation, ubiquitylation, etc.
  • Cell biology/ biochemical methods to understand protein function.

The Broad Institute is a world-leading non-profit research organization dedicated to realizing the promise of the post-genomic era for human benefit. Located in Cambridge, MA with strong ties to MIT, Harvard, and world class Boston hospitals, the Broad Institute brings together scientists of diverse backgrounds to solve critical problems in biology and medicine in an interdisciplinary manner. The Broad Institute, and the embedded Proteomics Group (www.broadinstitute.org/proteomics), have an outstanding track-record in training the next generation of research scientists and in developing and applying proteomic technologies critical to address important questions in biology and medicine. We collaborate with top-level researchers throughout the world, and results of these studies and our technology developments are published in top-tier journals.

Characteristic Duties:

  • Works with senior staff to set experimental strategy, project goals and timelines and works directly with collaborator teams to drive projects toward successful completion. Helps define experimental design.
  • Carries out detailed LC- and nanoLC-MS/MS analyses of complex, biologically derived protein, peptide and small molecule mixtures, including PTMs. Consults scientific literature and collaborates with other researchers from the scientific community as needed. Tracks and compiles results.
  • Helps develop and optimize new technologies and protocols; assists with the training of lab personnel on new methodologies.
  • Utilizes laboratory automation instrumentation to execute established proteomic workflows.
  • Helps to produce and isolates samples for proteomics studies using cell culture techniques, immunoprecipitation, subcellular fractionation methods and protein sample preparation from tissues and/or biofluids.
  • Utilizes other protein biochemistry and proteomic techniques such as western blotting, multidimensional chromatography and in-gel digestion to meet project and research goals.
  • Operates and maintains one or more LC-mass spectrometers (Thermo QExactive/Exploris-series, Thermo Lumos-series, Bruker timsTOF) and HPLC systems for peptide separation and analysis.
  • Helps ensure that project support, such as software, instrument spares, lab reagents, etc. are in place in accordance with project requirements.
  • Prepares detailed technical documents describing procedures and results. Independently prepares posters and assists in preparation of reports and manuscripts for meetings and peer-reviewed literature. Will assist supervisory scientists and collaborators with writing and editing as needed.
  • Orders supplies, helps to maintain stock of common expendables and reagents for Proteomics lab.
