Job Description
Description The Medical Director of the Children's National PANDA Pediatric Palliative Care Team will oversee the pediatric palliative care team. Responsibilities include overseeing operations and staffing, providing program development and quality assurance, supporting professional development of the team, and facilitating pediatric palliative care education both within the hospital and the surrounding community. Must be board certified in Hospice and Palliative Medicine with some experience in Pediatric Palliative Care.
Qualifications Required Skills/Knowledge
Knowledge of current principles, methods and procedures for the delivery of medical evaluation, diagnosis and treatment in the area of expertise.
Knowledge of legal and ethical standards for the delivery of medical care.
Ability to function independently in evaluating patient problems and developing a plan for patient care.
Ability to incorporate ethical concepts into patient care and discuss these with the patient, family, and other members of the health care team.
Ability to supervise, advice, and train clinical professionals and/or students in area of expertise.
Ability to maintain quality, safety , and/or infection control standards.
Demonstrates a personal commitment to Continuing Medical Education and remains current on the developments and progress in his/her subspecialty.
Demonstrates knowledge of and complies with legal and ethical standards for the delivery of medical care.

Required Licenses and Certifications
Fully licensed and credentialed attending staff category physician on the medical staff of Children's National Hospital Upon Hire (Required) Board certified or eligible for board certification in Hospice and Palliative Medicine (Required)
Board certification in relevant secondary specialty (Preferred)

Functional Accountabilities
Operations
  • Hiring/Onboarding/Orientation - Assist in the recruitment and interview process for new hires. Provide guidance during the credentialing/onboarding process and provide orientation to the site
  • Schedule - Manage schedule requests and build daily schedule while aligning with the master schedule at CNH. Facilitate coverage when there are gaps or call outs.
  • Staff Management - Conduct regular staff meetings to provide situational updates and allow discussion. Provide regular reminders and updates on key topics or events.

Program Development and Quality Assurance

  • Quality/Process Improvement - Identify and implement quality and process improvement initiatives as needed. Assist with updates and development of policies and protocols.
  • Clinical Care - Review clinical care issues and concerns that arise. Identify systems/process with opportunities to improve and implement changes and growth of the program as needed. Provide regular feedback and updates to the team.
  • Subspecialty and Multidisciplinary Care - Collaborate with subspecialists and multidisciplinary teams to support and provide excellent, evidence-based pediatric palliative care to patients in the hospital.
Professional Development and Mentorship
  • Promote and support the professional development of members in the group through guidance and mentorship.
Education
  • Physician/Community - Facilitate and coordinate pediatric palliative care educational opportunities for physicians and providers both within the team as well as other departments and in the surrounding community.
  • Multidisciplinary - In collaboration with unit managers and educators, facilitate and support pediatric palliative care educational opportunities for multidisciplinary staff as needed.
Professional Growth
  • Actively pursue professional growth and development through involvement in appropriate national professional organizations by holding elective office, participate in workshops and/or serve on committees.
  • Achieve academic advancement through peer-reviewed publication, abstract submission, and participation in research relevant to pediatric chronic pain management.
  • Student/Resident - Oversee and provide support to the GME office at CNH. Facilitate conversations to support other trainee educational initiatives.
Deliverables
  • Participate in regular department and hospital-wide committees to potentially include, but not limited to: Ethics, Provider wellbeing, opioid stewardship
  • Develop Annual PANDA palliative care strategic planning
  • Compile and submit annual Performance Metrics to senior leadership
