Job Description

INTRODUCTION

Under the clinical supervision of the charge nurse at the Department of Corrections (DOC), the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is directly responsible for, but is not limited to, carefully and accurately obtaining vital signs and initial patient history, performing routine nursing procedures (i.e. finger stick blood studies, urinalyses, pregnancy tests, and venipuncture, when appropriate), and conducting patient intake.

MAJOR DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Obtains vital signs and initial patient history.
  • Initiates the prescribed medical care plan on each patient.
  • Assists with obtaining consultations and referrals with other agencies (or appropriate delegations of these responsibilities).
  • Performs routine nursing procedures (i.e. finger stick blood studies, urinalyses, pregnancy tests, and venipuncture, when appropriate).
  • Administers and demonstrates immunization techniques and general knowledge of vaccination, where applicable.
  • Assists with clinical/medical procedures (i.e. pelvic exam, I&D, and wound care).
  • Records, in a timely manner, documentation of medication administration and/or treatment rendered
  • Provides patient and family education
  • Assures that adequate medications and supplies are ordered as appropriate to allow efficient health Center functioning.
  • Works and communicates with all of the staff to assure patient needs are met.
  • Other related duties and responsibilities

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduate of an accredited Practical Nursing School.
  • Licensed or eligibility in DC
  • One (1) year of experience in an ambulatory care setting, including experience with homeless or other special needs populations.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively work and communicate with diverse populations.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with business software (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite).

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

This position reports to the Charge Nurse for clinical Supervision.

GUIDELINES

The position abides by all rules and regulations set forth by applicable licensing and regulatory bodies, as well as UHC policies and procedures.

PERSONAL CONTACTS

The position requires contact with staff at all levels throughout the organization. There are also external organization relationships that may be a part of the work of this individual.

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The position requires the incumbent to be able to move easily about the health center. The work is basically sedentary in nature. However, some walking, bending and the carrying of light items are required.

OTHER SIGNIFICANT FACTORS

The incumbent must be able to balance the needs of diverse constituencies on a daily basis.

RISKS

The position's work involves everyday risk and discomforts, which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, meetings, training rooms, and other UHC sites. The work area is adequately lit, heated, and ventilated. The employee shall provide evidence of a recent (within the past twelve (12) months) health assessment that includes a PPD and/or chest x-ray results.
